CJ101: INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE

M6D2: Ensuring the Successful Re-entry of Former Prisoners

In a report conducted by the Re-Entry Council, it was found that virtually every person incarcerated in a jail and 97% of those incarcerated in prisons in the United States will eventually be released. This results in nearly 650,000 people being released from prisons and over 7 million different individuals being released from jails in this country each year. However, approximately two out of every three people released from prison in the United States are re-arrested within 3 years of their release.

Before responding to the discussion question:

Read the Executive Summary and the following pages: pp. xviii- xxiii (pp. 18-23) in: The Re-Entry Policy Council, (2004). “Charting the safe and successful return of prisoners to the community (Links to an external site.)” [PDF file size 5.7 MB].

Also, view Segments 1 and 2 of the video, From prison to home, available from the Excelsior College Virtual Library Films on Demand collection:

Segment 1: Profiles of AAP Parolees (Links to an external site.) [Video File][04 Min 47 Sec]

Segment 2: AAP Parolee Update: Richard Makes Another New Start (Links to an external site.) [Video File][03 Min 11 Sec]

After reading the assignments and lecture, listening to the audio lecture, and studying the zipped .pdf report and video above, you now have a better understanding of the issues surrounding the creation of public policies and agency practices when attempting to re-integrate prisoners into the community-- successfully. For this discussion, address the following topic:

  • You just received a federal grant to host a re-entry program.  What would your program look like?  What would be the key aspects of your program that would help the participants successfully integrate and not become a statistic by being re-arrested?

After your initial post, read and reply to at least TWO other postings made by your classmates with substantial responses that further the discussions. Remember to read and reply to questions from your instructor.

Keep the following in mind when making your posts to the discussion area:

  1. Did you complete all of the elements required in your initial discussion post?
  2. Did you respond to the initial posts of at least two of your fellow students?
  3. Did you acknowledge those who responded to you, including questions from your instructor?
  4. Were all of your posts made on time? That is, was your initial post made before Midnight Eastern Time on Thursday, and were your follow-up posts made before Midnight Eastern Time on Sunday.
