Correctional facilities are very structured organizations. These organizations are scrutinized by the courts, the media, the legislature, various government agencies, and numerous inmate advocacy groups, etc. It is vitally important that strict adherence to policy and procedure and to established schedules are maintained, in order to ensure that inmates are housed in a safe and secure environment.  As a Warden you are ultimately responsible for the care and custody of all confined in your facility. Public safety is your primary goal; that includes the physical safety of your staff and the inmates. Correctional agencies must adhere to government regulations, federal and state statutes, legal decisions, state and agency policies, and often labor bargaining agreements.

Management styles was a topic covered in the Week One Reading list; which management style do you believe would be the most effective in a correctional institution? Why? Which management style do you think would be the least effective in a correctional institution? Why?

Week 1 Conference: Monitoring/Controlling: A Management Function (1 page, 2 references)

A decision has been made to change search procedures in the intake area of a jail. Sentenced inmates will continue to be strip searched upon admission into the facility; non-sentenced (awaiting trial inmates) will receive a thorough pat search and have their property searched prior to admission.  A plan was developed and implemented that included drafting a policy; developing a search procedure for non-sentenced inmates; assigning sufficient staff to the Intake area; and training staff on the new procedure.  What steps can the Warden take to monitor the implementation of the new search procedure.
