A steady state, counter current staged distillation column is to be used to separate ethanol from water

Electrical Engineering

A steady state, counter current staged distillation column is to be used to separate ethanol from water. The feed is a 25 wt % ethanol, 75 wt% water mixture at 25 °C. The ?ow rate of feed is 5000 kg/h. The column operates at a pressure of 1 kg/cmz. The re?ux is retuned as a saturated liquid. A re?ux ratio of L/D = 2.5 is being used. We desire the bottoms composition of XB = 0.02 (weight fraction ethanol) and distillate composition of xD = 0.90 (weight fraction of ethanol). The system has a total condenser and a partial reboiler. Find D, B, QC and QR. 2. Calculate the number of stages for the above problem by Lewis method if the feed is input on the 6th stage from the top.
