The reflective prompt below is intended to help you reflect on your own learning for this module. Your participation and learning process are the important concepts, not simply the "correct" answers. Your answers can be used to help scaffold and guide your own learning, and to create a pathway through this course that meets your individual needs.

This reflection activity will be graded using the Learning Reflections Rubric. Please review this rubric prior to beginning your work. All reflection activities combined are worth 5% of your overall grade.

Module 3: Overview & Outcomes

This week, we will cover what some have termed the “Axial Age” in world history. But what does that mean exactly? Coined by German philosopher Karl Jasper, this period marks one of significant and sweeping change in many parts of the world. Confucius’ teachings helped cement the importance of education in ruling the East, and Greek philosophers began penning critical writings that sought to understand human nature.

As intellect and reason began guiding human action more and more, major contributions were made in the way of ethics, philosophy, and religious beliefs. This pivotal moment (pivoting as if on an axis—hence the term Axial Age) in history marked a meaningful transition for the world.

Course Outcomes (CO)

The course outcomes that will be addressed in this module are:

• CO 1: Examine significant people, places, societies, and cultural interactions to determine their influence on world history.
• CO 2: Assess the impact of various belief systems and political structures on the development of world cultures.
• CO 4: Explain how social, political, economic, or cultural forces shape relations between individuals and groups around the world (Gen. Ed. Career Competency 5.1).

Module Outcomes (MO)

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• MO 1: Articulate factual knowledge about the Axial Age and its impact on world history (CO1, CO4).
• MO 2: Discuss primary sources form the Axial Age to determine their historical significance (CO1, CO2).
• MO 3: Analyze a primary source for the purpose of demonstrating the importance of this skill to the field of history (CO4).
• MO 4: Defend the importance of a selected person, society, event, or idea in world history (CO1, CO4).
