At larger airports, there are two separate controllers and frequencies for ground control and tower control (Stearns, n.d.). This is due to the volume of traffic that the larger airport produces. Ground controllers are used to guide aircraft along the taxiways for takeoff or after landing (Stearns, n.d.). In comparison, the tower controller is responsible for controlling the aircraft on the runways as well as an established distance and altitude surrounding the airfield. This is typically 3000 feet above the ground and 5 nautical miles (Stearns, n.d.). At some airports that are medium size, the ground controller also handles the clearance delivery job. This job at larger airports is typically a separate entity. All of these positions are equally important and vital to the safe operation of air traffic at and around airports. If one entity does not perform its duty, then the entire system fails.
