ASCI 516 3.4 - Discussion: Air Traffic Control (ATC) Communication Errors
Assignment 3.4: Assess actual aircrew-ATC communication in real time at one of the busiest airports in the world JFK during "rush hour."
Step 1: Log on to live Air Traffic Control (ATC) Live Communication at LiveATC.net (Links to an external site.)
Step 2: Enter Airport/ARTCC Code: KJFK and Select at least one of the Arrival Frequencies [ie. KJFK NY App (ROBER)]
Step 3: Pick a time to listen to the arrival frequency for JFK Approach Control and KJFK Gnd/Twr during peak times (Suggested Times: 10am-6pm) for approximately one hour or until you identify a communication error and/or event which you can relay to the class. Listen to the ATC communications while imagining yourself as a non-native English speaker, trying to fly an approach in bad weather while communicating with ATC in this environment. If you do not identify a specific communication error while observing the Controller/Pilot interactions, then use the perspective from which you are listening (non-native English speaker) to identify an interaction that could have resulted in an error, to relay to the class.
Step 4: Post a short narrative of the communication error or potential error that you identified (no later than day 4 of this module). Relate the error that you have identified to this week's case study on Avianca 52.
