1. Summarize 2 laws that you have studied in the course.
I learned something from all of the laws studied in this course. I am now more informed on my rights as an employee, and also as a supervisor for my employer. I found two laws we studied that are referenced often in the workplace, but I did not know the intricacies of the laws. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the American Disabilities Act (ADA).
The FMLA entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. Eligible employees are entitled to 12 work weeks of leave in a 12-month period for several different situations, including a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the essential functions of his or her job (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman, 2019, p 849).
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals who have disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. “Disabled” is defined as a major life activity and substantially limits, along with the employee otherwise qualified for the position, and the employer reasonably accommodates the employee (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman, 2019, p 639).
