Monopolies DO exist in the private industry. There are two reasons why monopolies may form in the private sector. First, they may arise because there are such high start-up or fixed cost in the market that no other firms are able to enter. These are known as natural monopolies. Another reason monopolies form in the private sector is when the government gives them the exclusive right to sell the product by the government. This typically occurs via patents or copyrights.
