Citation Activity
On the final page of the syllabus are examples for citations in accordance with Chicago/Turabian citation guidelines.
As these examples indicate, there are three times when citations are needed:
In this assignment, you will be fixing sentences that lack appropriate citations.
Below you will find the publication information for a source as well as a selection from it. They are followed by a student composition based on that source.
The problem is that the student composition lacks citations. The student did not identify where they quoted. The student did not identify where they paraphrased.
If something like this were turned in for this class, the student would not only receive a zero for the assignment but would be written up for plagiarism, receive a zero for the course and face academic probation.
To fix the student assignment, making it acceptable for submission, you will need to place three (3) citations where and when they are needed.
On a sentence-by-sentence basis, compare the student’s composition with the original source and determine 1) where the quotation is and 2) where the two paraphrases are. Then:
For the formatting, you may use any citation style you prefer; just be consistent.
Not all sentences in the student composition must be cited.

“The point here is to remember that animals act based upon not only their instinct (breeding results) but out of their training, environment, stimulus, what they’ve learned, and many other factors. So we need to think in as nuanced a way about animal behavior as we do about people behavior. The accurate way to think of it is “this individual duck does this” or “this particular sheep does that.” And also, like people they change from year to year. Our ducks never ate mature vegetation during the growing season, just during the winter, for three years. Then in year four they attacked my large cabbage plants. Why? Maybe because it was very dry and the slug population plummeted. Maybe. The point is just because an animal or group of animals tend to have acted in certain ways in the past is no reason to think they will always act that way. They respond to conditions just the way people do, actually probably more.”

Student Composition:
Sentence 1: I’ve been saying for years that animals should be thought of as having their own personalities and characters.
Sentence 2: I know from experience that animals respond to conditions just the way people do, actually probably more.
Sentence 3: My pets respond to how people interact with them, the tone of their voice to their body language, as well as the color of their clothing.
Sentence 4: My rabbit is particularly sensitive and that’s led me to acknowledge that animal behavior is really quite nuanced, just like with people.
Sentence 5: It’s been these experiences that have revealed how much we need to accept, as a society, that animals are individuals and that they act in different ways in different contexts.
Sentence 6: Once we do that, we’ll be kinder to animals and have a more fulfilling relationship with them too.
