Boris wishes to investigate the relationship between yield (Gallons) and fertilizers (lb/acre) for tomato plants. An experiment was conducted one summer on 11 plots of land where the amount of fertilizers was varied and the yield measured at the end of the season. The amount of fertilizer (randomly) applied to each plot was chosen between 5 and 18 lb/acre. While the levels were not systematically chosen (e.g. they were not evenly spaced between the highest and lowest values), they represent commonly used amounts based on a preliminary survey of producers. At the end of the experiment, the yields were measured and the following data were obtained.
Fertilizer (lb/acre) | Yield (Gallon) |
12 | 24 |
5 | 18 |
15 | 31 |
17 | 33 |
14 | 30 |
6 | 20 |
11 | 25 |
13 | 27 |
15 | 31 |
8 | 21 |
18 | 29 |
a. Calculate the linear regression equation for Yield by Fertilizer and the R-squared value.
b. Calculate the predicted Yield given a Fertilizer of 16 lbs/acre.
