The control group is one where the variable in question is not manipulated. The experimental group experiences the change in the variable in question to see if it has an effect. As an example, if you wanted to do an experiment to question whether a new workout method was effective for weight loss, the control group would simply go about their normal day, while the experimental group would do the new workout program, and weight change would be compared between the two.
