The methods of sampling can be divided into probability and non-probability sampling. Probability sampling includes:

  • Simple random sampling: participants are selected randomly such as drawing a name out of a hat
  • Stratified random sampling: participants are selected from certain strata or portions of the population based on things like career or education level
  • Systematic sampling: participants are placed on a list and then a person is chosen at certain intervals (every 10th person is chosen from the list)
  • Cluster sampling: the population is divided into clusters based on things like location or organizations and then participants are chosen from different clusters
  • Multi-stage sampling: a more involved method of cluster sampling where clusters are further broken down into smaller clusters to be chosen randomly

Non-probability sampling includes:

  • Purposive sampling: only participants who meet a certain criteria are chosen to be in the study due to the significance of what is being studied (ex. Choosing people who have undergone cancer treatment)
  • Convenience sampling: selecting participants because they are available and accessible
  • Snow ball sampling: participants are asked to refer other people similar to them to be in the study because of the nature of the study (recruiting people who all graduated from the same high school)
  • Quota sampling: participants are selected based on preset characteristics (gender, age, profession)
