Circle of Young Scientists

WORKING WITH ADVANCED TOOLS AND MASTERS

GETTING STARTED

  • Open the file IL_PPT16_5a_FirstLastName_1.pptx, available for download from the SAM website.
  • Save the file as IL_PPT16_5a_FirstLastName_2.pptx by changing the “1” to a “2”.
  • If you do not see the .pptx file extension in the Save As dialog box, do not type it. The program will add the file extension for you automatically.
  • With the file IL_PPT16_5a_FirstLastName_2.pptx still open, ensure that your first and last name is displayed in the presenter notes on Slide 1.
  • If the presenter notes do not display your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.

PROJECT STEPS

  1. The Circle of Young Scientists connects youth with retired scientists and engineers to spark an interest in science. For the organization’s Tenth Annual Gala, you modify a presentation on one of the most popular experiments for the attendees.

On Slide 1 (“CIRCLE OF YOUNG SCIENTISTS”), format the picture of the circles and shapes as follows:

    1. Apply the Beveled Oval, Black picture style.
    2. Apply the Blue, 18 pt glow, Accent color 5 Glow Variation glow picture effect. (Hint: Depending on your version of Office, the picture effect may be named Glow: 18 point; Blue, Accent color 5.) [Mac Hint – Blue, 18 pt glow, Accent color 5.]
    3. Change the Lighting setting to Harsh in the 3-D Format section of the Bevel effects options to tone down the appearance.
    4. Use the Format Painter to change the formatting of the slide title text box so that it is consistent with that of the circles and shapes.
  1. On Slide 2 (“WHAT WE DO”), insert and format connectors as follows:
    1. Insert an Elbow Arrow Connector starting with the middle of the “S” in “KIDS”. End the connector at the middle of the “T” in “TO” as shown in Figure 1 on the next page. (Hint: Depending on your version of Office, the shape may display with the name Connector: Elbow Arrow instead.)

Figure 1: Position for the Connector on Slide 2

    1. Apply the Intense Line - Accent 3 shape style to the new connector line.
    2. Change the weight of the connector line to 4½ pt.
    3. Apply the Intense Line - Accent 1 shape style to the yellow connector line between “FUN” and “SCIENCE”.
    4. Change the weight to 2¼ pt.
  1. Open Slide Master View to make global changes to the presentation as follows:
    1. On the Celestial Slide Master layout, change the color of the bullets to Green, Accent 6 (10th column, 1st row of the Theme Colors palette).
    2. Change the size to 108% of text.
    3. Show the ruler and drawing guides, and then drag the vertical guide to 1.00" on the right side of the horizontal ruler as shown in Figure 2 on the next page.

Close Slide Master View.

Figure 2: Set the Vertical Guide in Slide Master View

  1. On Slide 3 (“HOW WE DO IT”), add the comment Do we have photos for these? to the slide.
  2. On Slide 4 (“WILL IT MELT?”), align the pictures as follows:
    1. Drag the bottom picture up so the three pictures are distributed vertically as shown in Figure 3 on the next page.

Figure 3: Distribute Pictures Vertically on Slide 4

    1. Drag each picture left so their left edges align with the vertical guide as shown in Figure 4 below, then hide the ruler and guides. (Hint: If your drawing guides are not positioned at 1.00” to the right of the horizontal rules as shown in Figure 3, refer back to Step 3.)

Figure 4: Align Pictures to the Vertical Guide on Slide 4

  1. On Slide 5 (“MELTS EASILY”), adjust the spacing of text objects so they better balance the page as follows:
    1. Change the left margin of the text box under the title text box to 0.4".
    2. Change the line spacing of the content placeholder to 1.5".
  2. With Slide 5 still displaying, adjust the animation as follows:
    1. Use the Animation Painter to apply the animation and settings applied to the melted chocolate picture (Picture 2) to the fruit picture.
    2. Add the Zoom Entrance animation to Picture 4 [Mac Hint – Zoom Moderate Animation].
    3. Change the duration of the Picture 4 Zoom animation to 00.75.
  3. On Slide 6 (“CHEESE MELTS BEST WHEN”), animate the picture as follows:
    1. Apply the Shape Entrance animation [Mac Hint – Shape Basic Animation].
    2. Change the effect option to Out.
    3. Change the duration of the animation to 01.50.

In Slide Sorter view, your presentation should look like the Final Figure below. Save your changes, close the presentation, then exit PowerPoint. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
