What were Charlemagne's accomplishments?
What were Charlemagne's accomplishments?
Expert Solution
Charlemagne's accomplishments consisted of bringing together much of Western Europe, maintaining stability and order throughout his large kingdom, spreading Christianity, and reforming education. During the Middle Ages kings and lords ruled small regions. However, Charlemagne was King of the Franks and acquired land that is now present day France, western Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. To maintain law and order in his large kingdom, Charlemagne assigned administrators districts to govern. Also, Charlemagne made regular visits throughout the kingdom to speak with his administrators and to gain knowledge on the various areas of his kingdom. When overtaking new groups of people, Charlemagne spread his Christian faith...by force. When defeating a group of people, Charlemagne gave the people a choice to either except Christianity as their new faith or to be killed. The Christian faith was introduced throughout Europe and rapidly spread to many groups. During the Middle Ages education was not greatly valued. However, Charlemagne wanted that aspect to change. He was illiterate and could not write, but he attempted to learn both reading and writing. He created schools and had curriculum created to teach valuable skills. His push for educational reform created the Carolingian Renaissance, which allowed art, literature, and music to flourish and be taught.
