Objective:

  • Compare, contrast and evaluate argument outlines

Instructions:

First, read the attached  RA Outlines Samples.docx

Second, formulate one weakness and one strength for each of the two outlines.

Third, decide which outline is the stronger of the two and explain your decision.

Tip: you may want to consider elements of the argument (claim, reasons, refutation) and rhetorical appeals (logos, ethos, pathos) in your commentary.

Outline #1

Weakness: A weakness that outlines 1had to me was the instant change in viewpoints. I did not expect that after reading the claim.

Strength: All though the viewpoints change as you get further through the outline, it does mention the opposing side. Outline 1 also covers each supporting detail in the claim with more specific details through the outline.

Outline 2

Weakness: Outline 2 seems very disorganized. the claim/thesis isnt properly worded. In my opinion outline 2 does not have a strong stem to it. Also, it does not refute the opposing side.

Strength: Outline 2 has strong supporting details.

I believe outline 1 is stronger because the claim sets a foundation/structure for the paper. the outline covers each section of the claim in deeper detail. Outline number 1 also mentions the opposing side point. As I read the claim for outline 1 I knew what to expect from the outline and the essay. It is very well structured and organized as opposed to outline 2.
