Whether you are settled in your career, completing your education to start a new career, or just planning to change jobs at some point in the future, there will come a time when you will need to dust off your resume and start looking for a new job. During this discussion we will consider what strategies you can use and how you can make yourself stand out during this process and make a good first impression.

As we have done in past modules, let’s work through these questions one at a time collectively coming to consensus. Joining this discussion early and checking in frequently will help us all to learn from each other throughout the week.

The first question is opinion and/or experience based so that you can begin the discussion immediately without having completed all of your readings. You must apply your assigned readings to subsequent questions.

First, let’s reflect on this question based on what we’ve learned so far this term:

  • Throughout this course we have learned about different communication styles, strategies, and methods to communicate. Based on this, what would be important to consider when writing a cover letter?  Thinking back to what we’ve learned about letters and emails, would your cover letter “read” or look any differently if you were sending it via postal mail as opposed to sending it via email?

Now, let’s apply our readings as we discuss the following questions:

  • Before you even begin writing your cover letter and resume, what type of job search strategies would you use in looking for a job?  Select one and explain how you would find it helpful. Have you used any of these strategies already and was one more beneficial than the others?  Working together, our conversation should allow us to explore a number of different strategies.
  • Now let’s consider what it takes to get to the interview stage. How do we “grab” the prospective employer’s attention? Consider this in terms of the resume, cover letter, and even the call to come in for an interview. How might our job seeking communications look when geared toward a particular employer (e.g. Excelsior Health Partners) versus posted to an online job site like Monster?
  • The Excelsior College Career Center has a lot of resources that can be beneficial to help you look for jobs and/or help with your resume and cover letter.  After exploring the Career Center, what will most benefit you in your future job searches?  How so?

This discussion will be graded using a rubric. Please review this rubric prior to beginning the discussion. You can view the rubric by clicking on "Discussion Rubric" on the Course Rubrics page within the Start Here module. All discussions combined are worth 30% of your final course grade.

Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on "Reply." Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.”
