1. Select one organization that you would consider working for at some time. Review the organization's Web site concerning possible employment with this organization. Comment on the following(2 pages, plus in-text citation and 2 references)

 

• How attractive is the Web site for a prospective employee? Why did you rate it this way? What changes would you recommend for this Web site?
• How easy is it to locate positions available within the organization? Why did you rate it this way?
• Is the ability to apply for a position user friendly? Why do you feel this way?

 

2. Your employer, Capella Manufacturing Company (CMC), has just developed a new aptitude test. CMC believes it will accurately predict the future performance of new sales reps (the company employees over 200 sales reps and is planning to double this number next year, so this test is very important to the company). The challenge is that it takes a new sales representative about 2 years to come up to speed on performance. Describe how you could validate this new test so that meaningful data will be available after the first 50 new reps are hired (in about 6 months). Conference 5 (WK7&10)

 

1. Briefly describe an assessment situation you have experienced. Using at least two sources, recommend how you could have improved the assessment process by adding at least two additional assessment devices to the one you experienced. Use the sources to describe why and how these new devices would improve the outcome for this assessment situation (2 pages, plus in-text citation and 2 references)

 

2. A number of HR professionals begin their staffing role believing that a paper-and-pencil test can be a cure-all for almost all staffing situations. Companies as diverse as Ameritas Life Insurance and the National Football League use the WPT as a means of assessing employees and potential hires. It is tempting to look at these numbers and use them as a key step in selecting people for positions. Many universities use the SAT, ACT, GMAT, or GRE exam to screen potential students. Using at least two sources, describe how you would use any test you select to help screen for a position you are familiar with. You could focus only on the extremes, focus on the mid-points (say 22 is mean for a job so I screen only for people near 22), or you could use some other method. Justify your rationale (2 pages, plus in-text citation and 2 references)

 

3. Employee turnover has many causes. Two common causes are: (2 pages, plus in-text citation and 2 references)

 

• A poor socialization process (the employee was not properly initiated to the organization).
• An inadequate employee evaluation program (employees are never sure of how they are actually performing their job).

Select one of these reasons and describe a situation you have experienced in which one of these was a problem. Briefly describe the problem and how you would have improved this situation. Use external sources as appropriate

 

Conference 6 (Wk8-9)

 

1. At one time, the idea of an organization promoting from within was seen as all good with no downside. But is it true that this is really the best way for an organization to go? Consider a time when you saw someone promoted and it was a positive situation, and think of one in which the outcome was not so positive. Briefly describe both of these outcomes, and using at least two sources, describe why these outcomes were either positive or negative (2 pages, plus in-text citation and 2 references)

 

2. Have you ever had a formal career plan? If so, briefly describe the plan. If not, describe what your ideal career plan would look like. How would having a formal plan like this be an asset to you as an employee? How would it help you be an asset to the organization? Describe at least two reasons why you feel this way and use at least two outside sources to defend your answers (2 pages, plus in-text citation and 2 references)

 

3. Each of us has been hired for a variety of jobs in our lives. Describe a hiring process you have gone through at some time in your life. Focus your description on the selection devices that were used in the hiring process. Evaluate the effectiveness of this process based on your readings and any research you do. Be sure to justify your evaluation. Recommend at least two steps that would improve the process you observed and justify your recommendations using at least two sources (2 pages, plus in-text citation and 2 references)
