Regulations assignment CEE/CME 564: Solid Waste Engineering parts 1 and 2: Submit study sheet and presentation on Isidore

Management

Regulations assignment

CEE/CME 564: Solid Waste Engineering

parts 1 and 2: Submit study sheet and presentation on Isidore.

part 3: prepare for discussion in class – no submission needed.

  1. Prepare a summary (about 4 or 5 minutes) of a selected federal act or topic approved by the instructor. Please sign up before leaving class, so that we do not have duplicates.

The presentation should include

  • major goals of the legislation or regulation, such as what material or behavior is regulated,
  • what type of measurement, assessment, or definition is used to define the problem (such as the ignitable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic categories of RCRA),
  • if possible, reasoning for why this waste received separate regulations,
  • and some item of general information. General information might consist of a nearby location in which it is applied, a news article on public concerns, a controversial aspect of the Act or its implementation, or perhaps even an example of its application on campus.

Practice; be sure you can observe the 5 minute guideline.

  1. Prepare a study sheet as a resource for the other class participants. The study sheet will be posted on Isidore. In the study sheet, provide an online link to sources you recommend for further reading. You are expected to read numerous sources of information, and select only a few of the best for your colleagues.

  1. For your own education, try to find a variety of information sources. They might include a highly technical document (perhaps a section of the Act), a document intended for environmental professionals or business person impacted by the regulation, or a news article intended for a more general audience.  Notice how the style of these sources differs.  Can you identify whether they are biased in any way? How do you determine the reliability of the source of information?  This item will be a discussion point in class, but does not have to be turned in.
