Article Analyses Requirements

During the semester, each student will post 2 current events (news) articles to the Articles discussion about a fraud that has occurred. These current events articles should not be older than six months and should be selected from well-known media sources (not blog entries, etc). Keep in mind this assignment is NOT looking for journal articles, scholarly articles, editorials, etc. (You are welcome cite journal articles or other scholarly articles, etc., in our weekly discussions.)

Here are the requirements for the Articles discussion:

(1) You will post one article in the “First Article” discussion by the end of Week 5. You will post your second article in the “Second Article” discussion by the end of Week 11. You do not have to wait until Week 5 to post your first article. You can begin posting as soon as you wish. You do not have to wait until Week 11 to post your second article. You can post your article as soon as the discussion for the second article opens.

Your responses to the articles of at least 3 other students in the "First Article" discussion are due by the last day of Week 6. Your responses to the articles of at least 3 other students in the "Second Article" discussion are due by the last day of Week 12.

(2) Once you post an article, it is your responsibility to acknowledge the responses other students make to your article. You will monitor your article for one week from the date you post it. After the one week monitoring period, you will no longer be responsible for following the discussion related to your article (but you can continue to monitor it for as long as you like).

(3) Find a current events (news) article from a well-known, reputable online news source (no blogs entries, etc)

(4) The article MUST relate to content from our textbooks

(5) The article should not be more than 6 months old (if at all possible)

(6) No duplicates – do NOT post an article already posted by another student

(7) When posting your article place YOUR first and last name and the article number in the subject line (NOT a description of your article).

For example, when John Smith posts his first article, the subject would be: John Smith Article #1. When John Smith posts his second article, the subject would be John Smith Article #2.

Do NOT change the subject line of any of the posts in the articles discussions when responding to another student.

(8) Your article post will have TWO attachments: (1) a copy of your article (copy and paste your article into a Word Document or you can attach a pdf copy of the article) and (2) your analysis (in a Word Document).

If you’d like to, you can include your summary and a link to your article in the body of your post.

(9) Your analysis will begin with a COVER PAGE. The second page will have a brief SUMMARY of the article. This summary MUST be in YOUR OWN WORDS and not simply copied from the article (you will lose points if it is not). This summary does NOT count in your page length.

(10) Here is the most important and heavily assessed portion of this assignment: After the summary, you will provide your ANALYSIS (beginning on page 3 of your Word Document).

Explain how and/or why your article relates to and/or illustrates concepts from our text. Tie your article in to AS MANY CONCEPTS FROM THE TEXTS AS POSSIBLE. Use in-text citations WITH page numbers in your analysis (for example: Albrecht p. 54).

This analysis will be very detailed and will be a MINIMUM of 3 full pages long and should not be longer than 4 pages. While there is not a penalty for going over the 4 page maximum, please stay as close to the 3 page minimum as possible. Your analysis is the main portion of your grade. (Remember, your summary will not count toward your page length).

Do NOT include any headings in your Word Document other than "Summary" at the top of page 2 and "Analysis" at the top of page 3.

Your analysis will NOT contain any tables, figures or bullet point lists. It will be all text in an essay format.

(11) REQUIRED FORMAT for the analysis: Arial 12 point font, double spacing and normal (1 inch) margins. Indent the first line of each new paragraph.

(12) Each article is worth a maximum of 60 points. Up to a 10% penalty can be deducted if you fail to acknowledge the responses other students make to your article during the one week period you are to monitor your article.

(13) Respond substantially to the articles of SIX other students.

Respond to the articles of at least three other students in the “First Article” discussion and at least three other students’ articles in the “Second Article” discussion.

A portion of your grade (15 points in the “First Article” discussion and 15 points in the “Second Article” discussion for a total of 30 points) is earned by responding directly to the articles posted by your classmates. The responses you make to the articles of other students will be graded on the same grading scale as your posts in the discussions (on a scale of 0-5 points) and should be no less than 2-3 substantial paragraphs long. In your post will be reflecting upon the article and its analysis. You can explain what you learned from this article and analysis, ask any questions that it brings up for you, provide your own insight, etc.

Your six responses to the articles of other students will all need to be made on separate days. (You can earn up to a maximum of 5 points per day when posting your responses.) Our goal is to have a comment/question posted to every article.

You are not limited to responding to only six total articles. You may respond to as many articles as you wish. Just keep in mind the minimum is three in each of the two article discussions.

(14) When responding to the articles of other students do NOT change the subject line of any of the posts and do not include the post you are responding to in your post.

Please note: The responses you make to the articles of other students are separate and distinct from the acknowledgements you make when a classmate responds to your article during the one week monitoring period. These acknowledgements do not count as responses to the articles of other students.

Recap of points for the Articles:

First Article: 60 points

Three responses to the articles of other students in the First Articles discussion: 15 points

Second Article: 60 points

Three responses to the articles of other students in the Second Articles discussion: 15 points

Total points for the Articles: 150 points

The percentage grade you earn for each article will be entered in the gradebook. For example if for your first article, you earned 56 points for the article and 10 points for responses, your grade would be 66/75 = 88%
