Pre-teaching vocabulary is important especially for ELL's. I just recently saw an activity that teaches vocabulary using pictures and visuals for younger age students as well as lower leveled ELL's. Giving the students a chance to identify key vocabulary terms before you teach the actual content is important for the students to make a connection with first for a better understanding later.
