The Life Orientation Test (20 points)

Scheier and Carver’s Life Orientation Test (1985), measures a respondent’s optimism, or expectations regarding the favorability of future outcomes. In scoring the scale, you should reverse their responses to items 3, 8, 9, and 12 (0 = 4, 1 = 3, 2 = 2, 3 = 1, 4 = 0), and then add up their responses to items 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, and 12 to obtain a final score (items 2, 6, 7, and 10 are filler items). Scores can range from 0 to 32, with higher scores reflecting greater optimism. The mean score is approximately 21.

Expert Solution

1. Did you answer each question truthfully?

I did answer each question truthfully. It was hard for me to admit to some of them though.

2. Did you score as expected?

I did, my results were not surprising. I tend to be pretty self-aware and I know I am not the most optimistic person.

3. Do you agree with your score?  Why or why not?

I do agree with my score, I am not the most optimistic person and I know it. The questions are pretty straightforward and all things I have either thought about or people in my life have pointed out about me already.

4. Did you find this assignment helpful?  Why or why not?

I did not find this assignment helpful. It told me stuff I already know and its not like a quiz telling me if I am a pessimist or optimist is going to change my outlook on life.

5. Would you consider asking you spouse/partner/mate to take THE LIFE ORIENTATION TEST?  Why or why not?

I did ask my boyfriend to take the test, I have him take most of these tests out of curiosity. He scored totally opposite of me which I was also expecting. I think that’s a good thing though. We balance each other out. When I get to down about things he comes in with a positive and when he gets too overexcited, I can bring him back down to earth. It is always interesting to see how we compare on different things.
