Focus group is one of the qualitative data collection method and it sometimes called as group depth interview as group can have interactive and spontaneous discussion on a particular topic or question. As Twitch is the worldwide medium and there are variety of users, we decided to do the focus group interview through offline and online to maximize the accuracy of the results.
The first offline focus group were held at the internet café in (CountryA). Most of them are heavy game players and they are also heavy Twitch users. There were two different aging groups and each group is composed with 9 and 10 members. As two groups having different ages, the income, education level and occupations were different too.
The questions were in order of
1. Why do you use Twitch? How did you know Twitch for the first time?
2. How often do you visit Twitch?
3. Did you have any inconvenient experience while you are using Twitch?
The first group included the age between 13 to 21. Most of them knew Twitch as they are playing the game called "League of Legend". To be the top players they needed to have better analysis than other people and they wanted to know more skills that they didn't think about. However, while we were having discussion, I was able to know that they did not started to watching game streaming through Twitch. Some of them started with YouTube Gaming, AfreecaTV, or Mixer, but due to some reasons they finally sticked in Twitch: Respondent A said that they switched to Twitch as their favourite streamer moves to Twitch, and Respondent B said Twitch provide better language service, and many of them said Twitch provide more clear pictures.
As they are heavy users, most of them use Twitch at least 5 hours per day. As the one round of games takes about 30 minutes and one streamer usually hold the broadcast for about more than 3 hours. So, if they are watching more than one streamer, it will naturally increase the using time.
Lastly, when we discuss about the inconvenient experience, there was one specific communication service which need to be developed. Respondent C mentioned that he was having struggling with getting refund, so he sent an email to (CountryA) Twitch Branch. However, he couldn't get a reply for a week and he sent another email to the headquarter. Unfortunately, the reply he got from the headquarter was "ask to (CountryA) Twitch branch". The communication between company itself and the customers are hard to be touched.
The second group includes the age between 23 to 27, the way that they entre to the Twitch is pretty much same as younger age group, but the reason why they are using is different. The older age group wants to have communication with the streamer and hear what the situation is the streamer is currently facing with (Respondent E).
Since most of them are university students or have job, they do not watch more than 3 hours per day. However, they do put more money to enjoy Twitch more (5 of respondents answered). For the younger age group, it was not able to hear that they like to put a donation to streamer. However, as the old age group has their own income and is able to afford investment to have much more enjoyable.
As they are putting more money into the Twitch, they were able to face with different problem. Respondent E mentioned that he didn't know how much will be cost for the first time because the price was only seen at US dollar and (CountryA) has different currency. Also, the other respondent F, who went to business trip often as a engineer, she said their server was stable when she went to Japan. So, she had to watch video in low quality picture and sometimes she couldn't hear anything while the video is still going on.
