This project will be done in groups of 5. Students need to self-register. This facility will be available as of Wednesday September 23, and will close after 1 week.

 

Value: 15% of overall grade.

Background

You are all HRM consultants employed by the HR consulting company HRM Providers. HRM Providers has been contracted by a company [you will choose the company you would like to examine. This will be referred to as X Company as we continue the background]. The company recognizes its' need to implement a rigorous HR planning program.  HRM Providers has been chosen as 1 of 2 HRM consulting companies which will be bidding for the contract to complete the work for X Company. 

The Senior Manager at HRM Providers - Jakub Blakensmith - has made a request of your team. You need to present Mr. Blakensmith with a document that:

-       A) tells him all about X Company.  He wants to know the history of X Company; the Company's mission, vision, and values; the corporate strategy, the business strategy; a full representation of the products/services provided by X Company; industry analysis; and as much other general information as possible. For example, it would be good to include information on the organizational structure, the # of employees [past and present so he can see change patterns], and any other information that could be informative to him.

-       B) Tells him the forecasting methods that you would recommend should be used to determine future human resources demand and supply for X Company. Here you need to recommend: i) two (2) quantitative forecasting methods, and one (1) qualitative method for determining demand; and ii) one (1) quantitative forecasting method for determining supply. 

-       C) You will need to explain these methods to your Senior Manager Mr. Blakensmith. He has never done a course in HR Planning, so you will need to provide information such as, for example, how the models work; what information you would need to collect from X Company in order to work these models; etc. [further details are provided below]

-       Form your team and self register

-       Choose an organization that you will investigate and report on for this project. Note: no 2 teams will be allowed to study the same organization. First come, first served. (Email your professor as soon as you have chosen a company. An Announcement will be posted in SLATE, and will be updated as teams make their choice. Each team must check this announcement to ensure the company they have in mind has not been chosen already)

In Part 1,

a)              A full description of your organization, and must include:

-       A brief history of the organization including its' location

-       Include the organization's strategies (corporate and business); mission, vision, and values statements.

-       Describe fully the products/services

-       Provide an industry analysis. An industry analysis should tell of what is happening (or has happened) in the industry. There must be no mention of your company here. We need to understand the industry life cycle, and other information about the status of the industry.

-       Describe the overall organizational structure and the total number of employees for the last 3 years (Speak with the professor if there are concerns here)

 

b)              a. Use information from our lectures to examine the external environment. Choose only those elements that are impacting your organization; provide a full discussion of these elements and how they are affecting both the organization and the HR strategy. 

b.    Also include a brief analysis of the competitive pressures

 

Part 2

 

  1. Provide an opening paragraph where you will explain the value of HR planning to your senior manager Mr. Blakensmith. Relate this to the projections for the particular industry the organization is in. Remember that you are speaking as consultants. In the matter of professionalism, it is always important to have an opening epilogue that describes and explains the relevance of the function your team has been called to advise on. This paragraph therefore must clearly explain what HR Planning is.

 

  1. Provide information on three (3) methods of planning the demand for, and one (1) method of determining the supply of human resources that you recommend to be appropriate for the company. Choose 2 quantitative, and 1 qualitative method for demand, and 1 quantitative method for supply. 

Explain why you recommend these approaches. So first, explain the methods i.e. how the methods work, then explain why you chose these.

 

  1. You must advise of all the information (historical and otherwise) that your team would need to collect from X Company to be able to perform the forecasts identified above [b]. [i.e. identify the internal and external HR data that you will need to collect from your organization, or generate yourself, in order to undertake this consultancy project]. This is important information. Your Senior Manager must understand that without this information, your team would not be able to complete the proposed forecasts and analysis.
