Psychoeducational Group Facilitation Experience (2%)

The teaching topic and plan should be discussed with faculty and should be developed for a group of patients. In the virtual clinical setting, the student will prepare a psychoeducational group as if it would be implemented in person with patients in the clinical setting.  The plan should include the following:

  1. Identification of the need for a skill that would assist patients to be better prepared for community living or to manage their symptoms more effectively.
  2. Identify 3 therapeutic objectives that each patient in the group should attain.
  3. Describe the topical content of the group and an activity that incorporates the topic.
  4. Plan for step-by-step implementation of the group and the role of each facilitator.
  5. Determine how you would evaluate the effectiveness of the group. Describe at least 2 indicators or measures to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies and/or each participant’s response

Your teaching plan should focus on mental health concerns, although you may present a topic of special interest to your patients (such as hypothyroidism), with the approval of your instructor.  The primary goal of the teaching activity is to provide information that will help patients improve their ability to understand and cope with their symptoms and treatment. Possible topics include (but are not limited to) medications, managing problems related to treatment, or communicating more effectively with family and significant others. Faculty will attend to provide supervision and support.
