Gene ontology enrichment analysis is a powerful tool to help understand the mechanisms of how genes from genome wide association studies (GWAS) might be affecting a given trait.

You have 2 things to do today.

1. Provide a description of what Gene Ontology Enrichment Analysis (GOEA).  This should include an explanation of what gene ontologies are, what enrichment means, what is the null hypothesis and how is GOEA used as a tool to help interpret results from GWAS.
2. I have given you a fake “target” set of Drosophila genes that associated from a GWAS. Use the data set provided (target and background lists) to perform a GOEA using the following website:

and be sure to interpret the results. I didn’t tell you the phenotype that was mapped but can you make a guess based on the genes that came back?

Run all the ontologies but don’t change any of the advanced parameters.  NOTE:  The background list is the full list of all Drosophila genes (~14,000)
