Response to Discussion Question

Respond to the discussion question below. Your response must meet the following criteria:

  1. Post your response to the discussion question in the box. Click "Reply" and answer the question. You do not need to upload anything to answer the question.
  2. Your response to the question should be 250-300 words. If you need more space, please do not go over 500 words.
  3. Your response must include a specific piece of evidence from Chapter 8 of your textbook.
  4. Your response must include a specific piece of evidence from one of this week's lecture.
  5. Your response to the discussion question must be posted by 11:59 pm on Thursday October 8th.

Discussion Question

The discussion question is below. Before answering the question, take a moment to introduce yourself to the class. Provide your name and any other information you would like to share about yourself:

You are learning about hegemony, alienation, and culture of capitalism in the midst of a global pandemic.  Reflect on how you have had to navigate institutions since the beginning of the "stay-at-home" orders in Washington State.  Discuss how your interactions with others have changed during this time, as well as how your lectures and reading apply to your experience.

Respond to Three Peers

After you have answered the discussion question. Respond to your peers. You will not see any of your peers' responses until you answer the discussion question yourself:

  1. You must respond to three people.
  2. You must respond to two original posts. That is, you must respond to two of your peers' responses to the question.
  3. You must also respond to one person who responded to you. This last one can get tricky. If you are approaching the deadline and no one has responded to you, then it is okay to just respond to a third original post. Try to provide adequate time, however, for someone to respond to you.
  4. Each response must be at least 100 words. They must reference a specific part of the person's response and expand. This can mean validating something they said and then adding your own thoughts, it can mean providing a counter argument, or tying it to current events. You are not limited to these options, but your responses do need to show that you read the person's post, thought about it, and expanded on their ideas.
  5. Your three responses are due by Friday October 9th at 11:59 pm.

Expert Solution

Hi guys! My name is xyz and I am finishing up my prerequisites for Dental Hygiene.

You are learning about hegemony, alienation, and culture of capitalism in the midst of a global pandemic.  Reflect on how you have had to navigate institutions since the beginning of the "stay-at-home" orders in Washington State.

Since the beginning of the “stay-at-home” orders in Washington State, I have been taking online classes. It has not affected me as much because I was already taking some online class pre-COVID. However, I believe that the birth of consumerism in the early 20th century benefit how we navigated institutions during this pandemic. If it wasn’t for the crisis of capitalism and the overproduction of goods, the idea of laptops and internet would not be seen as a necessity and an incentive. It would have been a luxurious item that not a lot of customers would purchase. The reason why it would stay as a luxurious item is because the “culture of nineteenth century America emphasized not unlimited consumption but moderation and self-denial…People purchased only necessities…or shared basic items when they could” (182). If that was the case, students would not have these resources to help them be successful in school. Therefore, I am thankful for the birth of consumerism.

Discuss how your interactions with others have changed during this time, as well as how your lectures and reading apply to your experience.

During the pandemic, my interactions with others have definitely changed. After this week’s lecture, I realized that I have become alienated from myself and from others around me because my interactions have been short and effortless. According to the lecture video, “Alienation”, those who are alienated from themselves “lost connection to their product, their labor, and other people”. Not only that, but “work becomes centered on meeting basic needs”. Because of the pandemic, I have not been working much. But now that stores are opening up again, I am back working at Starbucks. I am working to survive and help provide for myself and my family because the pandemic did hit us hard, financially. I lost the enjoyment I had at work from before COVID. I feel as though I’ve lost physical and spiritual connection to the material world and I am unable to contribute as much to my workplace.

Overall, the lectures and readings has opened my mind up to new concepts and vocabulary words. I am able to use these new concepts and vocabulary words I learned in my daily every day life.
