The assignment topic is as follows:
Covid-19 and international monetary arrangements. How has Covid-19 changed the way in which
central banks and governments conduct monetary policy?
You can either choose one country and present a country case study; or select 2 or more countries
and present a comparative study. Further, you can choose to either present an empirical analysis
using available data for your country or countries; or present a literature review of available papers
relating to your country or countries.
This is a research project. I expect it to take the appearance of an academic paper and be structured
broadly as follows:
- Introduction.
A statement of the research question/s you are pursuing and the manner in which you attempt
to address the question/s. Define your work here and convey to the reader (me) the nature
and importance of this topic for the country/countries that you have selected.
- Theory/Model.
Find the theories/models/economic intuition that are relevant for the research question above.
Describe the salient characteristics of these theories or models and what the models conclude
or predict.
- Empirical evidence
Find some evidence that supports (or refutes) your conclusions from the above section. You
may do this ether by collecting and analysing your own data and presenting your evidence, or
by literature review where you present the findings from the scholarly and policy literature
pertaining to your research topic. The learnonline website has several possible data sources.
We will also go over potential data sources in class.
- Conclusions
In this section you should provide some broad concluding remarks, outline your main
findings and present some implications of these findings for policy, or practice.
- References
The assignment must be clearly written; any diagrams, charts etc. must be clearly labelled and
explained in your text and any equations defined and explained. The quality of your argument, the
clarity with which you explain and illustrate the relevant concepts and the way in which you relate
theory to evidence is very important here.
