Sociology

designing a basic sociological research study It is important that you have read Chapter 1, the lecture file, and the document on research study format and design, before beginning this assignment!  You can earn a total of 20 points for this assignment.  Your study design must follow the format provided, and each section will be gauged on its own merit and points awarded accordingly.  Be sure to number each section, and address all aspects of that section as suggested below.  Section 1 can usually be managed in a single sentence, but the others should be at least a few sentences if not a paragraph. Section 1: Your topic.  (worth 5 points if completed fully and correctly) Please come up with a SOCIOLOGICAL study question that would be reasonably doable in a single research study.  See your document on research study format and design for details of what is and is not a sociological study, and on how to manage the scope of a topic.  Suggesting a topic that is too broad or too narrow, or that is not sociological, will result in loss of points.  You may want to frame this in terms of a hypothesis, if you are not sure how else to come up with an appropriate topic.  Section 2:  What form of research will you be doing, and why? (5 points if completed fully and correctly) This part is largely determined by the sort of topic you want to research, as explained in the research study format document.  Be sure to tell me why you think the form of research chosen fits with the topic.  Will your research be qualitative?  Quantitative?  Experimental?  Participant observation?  Ethnography?  I will be checking to see if the method chosen fits with your topic/hypothesis.  For instance, if you tell me that you want to see what the relationship is between student gpa and use of the tutoring center, but tell me that you are doing qualitative research, I am going to dock you points. Section 3: How will you be getting your data?  From whom?  How will you find it/them?  (5 points if completed fully and correctly) Please read your chapter very carefully for this item.  Are you using available data?  If yes, what and where will you find it?  If not, you will be talking to people - how?  The requirements for survey data are much different than for participant observation.  How will you find people if you are doing surveys?  Who is your sample, for survey?  If you are doing another form of research, who will you be talking to, and in what setting - and how would you get them to give you the ok to observe or participate? Section 4:  What potential drawbacks, limitations, or difficulties might you face if you were to actually try to conduct this research?  (5 points if completed fully and correctly) Imagine what would happen if you really tried to conduct this project you have designed. Would it be difficult?  Would there be parts that would be tricky/risky/problematic/expensive, etc?  Why?
