We all had the unfortunate experience of seeing how computers can, at times, make life's journey abit more difficult. This is especially true in knowledge centric workplaces. Describe an example of a very poorly implemented database that you've encountered (or read about) that illustrates the potential for really messing things up. Include, in your description, an analysis of what might have caused the problems and potential solutions to them. Be sure to provide supporting evidence, with citations from the literature.

Answer:

Poorly implemented database can ruin everything. Data is an important part of working system and it is important for the database designer to understand the data which is represented and the acquired database system needs to be managed well.

A small organization saw the issue of complete mess up of database. This was because the industrial information system where the data was acquired was a manual process and it did not have similar data model like the industrial system where in information is generated effectively in real time. It is important to generate data in real time and the reason is different handling and changing records as compared to manual handling which is not useful for the database (Louis Davidson) . The solution in this case would be to know the database effectively and implement it effectively. It is also necessary to know the purpose of the database system and choose the database engine effectively. This affects normalization level, data structure, record size etc.

Another practice noticed in a small organization as an intern in a consulting company was poor normalization.. The normalization principles were not given importance here. There was error in data layouts and they came out differently. The solution to this will be to focus on analysis techniques and follow them to get the database to perform effectively. It is important to normalize the database to third normal form and it will represent the entities effectively. It is important to comply with 3NF, 2NF, or even 1NF if one stumbles with the tables and wants to consider the redesign of the tables
