We begin, uncharacteristically, with what may seem like a detour. Bear with me.
ASIDE - Alice of life from Dr. Larsen
With the caveat that my extensive lifespan to date is but a grain in the sands of time, | cannot remember when scientists were not concerned with the odds _ for the continuing viability of life on earth. In the 1970s, in elementary school,
we were shown a short si/ent filmstrip only a few minutes long.
In it, actors were portraying life on earth after the natural environment had
- become so compromised that people had to live underground and the people
were very afraid when someone had to go to the earth's surface for some
__ task. It scared the living daylights out of me and | have never forgotten it. My
_ Classmates and | may have been too young for such strong material. But,
there it was. And for better or worse, images from that filmstrip occasionally
pop up in my mind.
This segment of a filmstrip was certainly not the first nor the last of its kind,
_ with this general theme showing up in feature films in the movie theatres and
in other educational videos.
Perhaps less disturbingly, also in my young life were Public Service
Announcements by the Ad Council on TV, which included animal characters |
ike these:
¢ Woodsy Owl's "Give a hoot. Don't pollute."
