Assignment 1: Acting Ethically in a Zone of Conflict
Instructions
An Ethical Dilemma related to the Distribution of Humanitarian
Aid to Civilians living in a Zone of Conflict
Two truck drivers, each in a separate truck, are driving on a highway to deliver a shipment of humanitarian aid (food, water, medical supplies) to the people in a village that has been devastated by violent conflict. While driving, the drivers see that, to keep progressing, they will have to drive beneath a low bridge. The top of the bridge is not high enough, so the first truck gets stuck and the top of her truck gets badly damaged. Cars slowly begin to back up behind both trucks, and the line is almost 2 kilometers long.
The first truck driver thinks that they should both reverse, even if the traffic behind will make it very difficult.
The second truck driver, in the undamaged truck, thinks that they should continue
going forward and [hopefully] force/plow the first truck through, even knowing it
will cause more damage to the top of the truck, and ruin some of the aid inside.
Are these the only options available? Both sound less than satisfactory, and risky.
Mentally step back from the immediate 'my-truck-is-stuck-under-a-bridge'
situation. The drivers could keep arguing fruitlessly, and/or try the different
options they each generated.
Or they could consider the broader situation of the importance of the aid trucks / )
getting to the destination in a timely manner.
Generate two (or more) new strategies to reach what they now understand as their
common goal.
Submit 2 paragraphs, 1 for each strategy.
¢ One paragraph of at least 5 complete sentences describing the overall
logistics and plan for carrying out your Strategy 1.
¢ Repeat for Strategy 2.

For this discussion we are meeting at Culture
Colombo, a restaurant in Sri Lanka. The seating looks comfortable and inviting, so let's order some food and drink and then discussion the chapter we read this week. They say the food is fresh and locally sourced, but to be mindful as it can be a bit spicy because of the liberal use of spices and chilis. If you don't care for the "heat", they suggest ordering a yogurt drink with the meal to take the temperature down a few degrees.
