Writing

Organizational theory
Task 1: PROCESS-BASED ORGANIZATION
(Note: both part A and part B must be answered. Part B should not comprise more than about a
quarter (25 per cent) of the total number of words in task 1).
"Process-based organization is trending", many claim. This means that this way of organizing is one
of today's heaviest master's ideas, which prevails both when completely new organizations are to be
designed, as well as when established organizations are to be reformed - and both in the private
sector and in the public sector. It is expressed, among other things, in a popular diagnosis that
modern organizations consist of vertically erected formal structures that are often referred to as
"silos, and that such organization prevents effective horizontal flow, is inhibiting value creation, and
has too little focus on end users, such as customers, patients and ordinary citizens.
A) Explain and analyze possible reasons why this "organizational recipe" (process-based organization)
has become so popular. Which conditions can help to promote, and which can help to inhibit,
conversion to process-based organization in a vertical organized business?
B) Imagine yourself in the role of someone who has been tasked with carrying out a change to a
process-based organization of a larger - and previously traditionally vertically divided, functionally
organized business. Use insights from the subject - and preferably from adjacent subjects (such as
resistance to change) - and outline and justify a strategy for how you will proceed to carry out the
conversion to a more horizontally organized business.
Task 2 "WE JUST HAVE TO HANDLE THIS": HOW ORGANIZATIONS CAN TACKLE SITUATIONS WITH
DRAMATIC CHANGES IN THE ENVIRONMENT
Contemporary times are marked by dramatic changes in the environment of our time's organizations
in both the public and private sectors. The world has just been through an extensive pandemic - and
that was replaced by the outbreak of war in Ukraine and the subsequent major global political and
economic upheavals. Markets have disappeared, new ones have appeared, at the same time as
political framework conditions for many businesses have changed significantly. In addition,
digitization has become a powerful driver that challenges organizations' ability to change. As a newly
graduated MBA student, you have acquired - and also want to contribute to society with knowledge
of how leaders can change organizations. You therefore write an essay in which, based on one or
more theories within leadership research, you critically discuss what characterizes skilled versus less
skilled change leaders (including in terms of characteristics, behavior and techniques) - and with a
particular focus on how leaders can achieve change in organizations. A central question you ask in
the essay is whether managers today face the same demands on how to achieve changes in
organizations than they did 5 – 10 years ago. In this essay, you illustrate the points with one or more
examples.
NOTE: The scope of each answer must be up to 2,000 words. The total number of words in the two
answers must be up to 4,000 words.
