Task Instructions

you will select a published paper evaluating an occupational therapy intervention suitable for inclusion in your Task 2 literature search, and complete Forms 1 and 2 in relation to this intervention:

Form 1 Initial Search Details: You will create a PICO question using Form 1 that will help you locate appropriate literature for Task 2. To do this, you need to review and consider the task description and rubric for Task 2 in conjunction with this task. You will then conduct a preliminary search of the literature to seek evidence and identify one (1) key article (must be a quantitative paper, and preferably an RCT).

 Form 2 CASP form: You will critically appraise this key article using Form 2, the CASP critical appraisal tool (or similar suitable tool). Please also see attached guidelines to help you complete this Form.

Research Task 2  ESSAY

Word length:  2500 words (excluding references) , +/- 10%

Tables will be included in the word count.

Description:  

You are a senior occupational therapist working in a large metropolitan hospital, with a team of five occupational therapists in total. You have been asked by the health service to start a new service for outpatient clients for a fall’s prevention clinic for osteoporosis. You are required to review the current literature to create EBP clinical guidelines for use in this clinic.

•             Introduction - statement of the problem (approx. 300-500 words)

•             Methods - how you searched the literature; search terms used; databases used; critical review methods; inclusion/exclusion criteria (approx. 250-500 words)

•             Results - summarise the number of articles identified and number of relevant articles, summarise CASPs. You will need to critically review a minimum of 5 research articles (approx. 250-500 words)

•             Discussion - Review and synthesis of the literature – what is known so far; identify gaps in the literature (approx. 1000 words)

•             Conclusion - Summarise how the literature reviewed may help to inform future clinical guidelines of how to screen, treat and evaluate this client group and how to educate a client attending the falls prevention clinic (approx. 300-500 words)

You will be assessed using the following criteria: 

•             Ability to review, analyse, consolidate, and synthesise the literature applying a knowledge of research methods and paradigms to existing research (The research question is described clearly, concisely, and systematically. The search strategy and selection of literature is comprehensive and highly appropriate. Review is rigorous and extensive, in line with contemporary evidence-based practice principles. Findings are consolidated and well synthesised.

 

•             Critical thinking and judgement in developing your understanding of the topic and identifying key points for clinical guidelines  (A critical and thoughtful approach is taken to describing the research available in the identified topic area. Key gaps in the existing research are identified and clearly articulated. Recommendations for future research, and justification for the proposed research study, are clearly expressed, well supported, viable, and insightful

•             Presentation and clarity of communication Overall presentation, including APA 7th ed., word count, structure, flow, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and written expression Your research project proposal should follow APA 7th edition guidelines, including stylistic conventions and referencing.
