Students are assessed throughout a graduate program in professional counseling. Therefore, students must demonstrate competency in the following three areas: academic, professional, and clinical.

Academic refers to the student's ability to achieve a 3.0 grade point average, and their ability to pass major examinations such as the Comprehensive Examination and the National Counselor Examination (NCE).

Professional refers to the student's ability to understand and apply the ACA code of ethics, to understand and welcome diversity, to work as a team member, be part of a collaborative learning community, and be able to demonstrate constructive peer feedback.

Clinical refers to the student's interpersonal competence to integrate counseling techniques and approaches, and the student's motivation to engage in reflective practice for enhancing self and other awareness
