Discussion 3.1: Obesity Reference: The psychosocial issues that obese individuals face are different from those of normal people. For instance, they may experience stress and anxiety, and they may also have a negative body image. The psychological issues that obese individuals face are different from those of normal people. Those with obesity tend to have low self-esteem and are prone to be bullied at school and work. When caring for obese clients, the nurse can approach them with compassion, love, and a nonjudgmental attitude. This will encourage the client to behave well and will aid in the development of a trustworthy nurse-client relationship. Not only will it help aid the nurse-client relationship but it will also help with keeping the patient engaged and willing to learn. Nurses serve as role models for patients and families by educating them about nutrition, the healthcare system, and obesity-related diseases. When assessing a client's history, the nurse must avoid making weight-related judgments, and when establishing a diet, the nurse must remember to include all of the patient's favorite foods while keeping in mind the calorie restriction. Nurses can assist patients in developing a safe and effective exercise plan that they will stick to. When family and communities are involved, these personal contacts and individual care can be even more helpful. Helping one patient make good decisions may benefit the entire family. Nurses are also familiar with the dangers associated with obesity and may educate patients on the more scientific aspects of this health problem. Patients are more able to appreciate the benefits of choosing healthy choices when they are told how obesity can lead to diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer.
