The lecture and text gave me insight into how similar theories can be, but they can also be set apart according to the perception of the people who are utilizing them. Jensen's theory attributes genetics to intelligence and a person's skin color. I do not find this theory to be sound and evidence-based. In referring to the question that you asked during the lecture, " Does this sound like discrimination or prejudice?), my answer is yes. I think that it does sound like discrimination and prejudice. These types of perceptions still exist today in some people. There has been an instance where I have observed a lighter-skinned person who was better excepted, who was considered to be more intelligent and better suited for a job than a darker-skinned person who had more experience and education. The darker-skinned person also had references to back up her skills where as the lighter-skinned person did not but was given the promotion.

I agree that oftentimes people have a set of beliefs that stem from what they have been taught. In many instances, they don't question what has been taught because they trust the source from which it came. Although sometimes there have been no facts presented to back up some teaching, it is still regarded as truth. A lot of perceptions and ways of thinking that people have come from their culture and the things that they were taught growing up. 

In this day and time, I think relativism is relevant because there are many more informational sources put out today than there were back in the day that people depend on to help them to make life decisions. This causes people to gravitate to evidence-based opinions. Even when considering what appears to be fact, it oftentimes comes down to a person's perception of the information being presented. 

I am familiar with people who relate their Biblical beliefs to be the only teaching that is true. Some people believe that the religion that they have been taught is the only true religion. Oser's Religious Judgements coincide with what many people are taught concerning God's actions. Many believe that God's actions towards our lives depend on whether we have been good according to religious beliefs or bad by acting outside of our religious teaching.

Duvall's Life Course Transition shares that families are affected by people coming into the family and also that families are affected when people leave the family. I find this to be true because I have seen how devastated people can be when someone leaves the family such as with death, divorce, etc. I have also seen how people can become joyful when someone enters the family as with the birth of a child or marriage.

My thoughts on the topics of the lecture this week:

1) Intelligence- I enjoyed the conversation around intelligence, specifically Howard Gardner's eight types of intelligences. While I was in school, I was involved in all types of musical activities, specifically band. I always just did it for fun, so I was never really hard core about about it. There were some specific kids though that I was always confused on why they were so good when we pretty much did the same things. Now looking back on it, I think they probably had more of a musical intelligence than I did. Going back to the Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray's theories, more often than not, these kid's parents either musically talented or were music teachers or professors themselves. I think it's it's interesting that something like being good at singing or playing an instrument might be genetic. Thinking about myself, I'm honestly not sure which one of the eight intelligences I am. 

2)Hierarchy of needs- I remember talking about Maslow's hierarchy of needs in school because we used it to analyze books we read in my English class. I honestly never thought about it being used by a therapist. I now have a deeper understanding. Question for Dr.Hartman, you said at the end of the lecture that you think spirituality is woven throughout these needs(I hope I phrased it correctly). When I was growing up I would go to teen conferences, and I've heard many speakers say that when they have counseled people who seem to have everything, yet they still say something is missing. Would that "something that is missing" be spirituality in your opinion? 

3) I very much related to William Perry's intellectualism development in college years. As a teen I was very much a straight forward facts are facts person, but after a couple years in college(even in my first year) I began to realize that everyone has a different opinion. I also had to realize that different opinions were okay, and maybe my "facts" were really opinions. Now I'm at a point where I know that everyone is different, and comes from different upbringings. I really enjoy learning about others point of view without thinking they just don't know what they are talking about.
