the research you would usually do for a research paper, using at least four academic sources sources, on any topic we have covered this semester.

But instead of a paper, you will create a 80s style zine based on your research. A 'zine is a fun but meaty format for making ideas accessible (materially and academically) to others. It's an alternate format that has seen a recent resurgence in the pandemic. I'm attaching below a pdf copy of the assignment zine that shows the format and size expectations for your project. You will read and absorb your research and then think about how to make it accessible to people beyond the university.

Your zine is 12 pages total –or three 8 ½ x 11 pieces of paper folded in half to make a booklet. The outside page is strictly a cover and may have a blank interior. The bulk of your writing is on the eight internal pages. You may include pictures, graphics, artwork, infographics, whatever you can use to illustrate your topic.

Citations may be informal (Gallardo, 32) with just author and page, as long as you include a complete (and properly formatted) bibliography on your last page.

You will read and absorb your research and then think about how to make it accessible to people beyond the university. Instead of a research paper, you will create an 80s style zine. It's an alternate format that emerged in the 1980s when copy machines became more common and cheaper. People used copier to make minimagazines (‘zines) and share them with others. It was used to bring up topics that we would not see in mainstream magazines. Your zine is 12 pages total –or three 8 ½ x 11 pieces of paper folded in half to make a booklet. The outside page is strictly a cover and may have a blank interior. The bulk of your writing is on the eight internal pages. We’ve seen a recent resurgence of ‘zines and zinemaking in the pandemic. I'm going to quote Joshlyn Thomas' (South Asian Youth, Houston) description here on her experience of zinemaking: Your zine text should be roughly 1100-1300 words. Due Monday, May 17 . 4 During quarantine, zines (short for “magazine”) have become a medium to explore and express the thoughts that are swimming around in my head. Making these 8-pagers, in particular, brings me so much joy. just in the process of taking an ordinary piece of paper and making a medium for art, words, and information that I think is worth sharing. The versatility of the zine is something that has drawn me to the form. Zines can contain anything: text, photographs, illustrations, infographics, collages. Something so small has the potential for multitudes. I’m still quite new to zinemaking, but it has been a way for me to explore the interests I’ve always had but never felt I had the skill or authority to execute (thanks, imposter syndrome). Zine-making has taught me that being a novice shouldn’t stop me from trying to learn more and potentially share with those around me so we can learn together and from each other. Self-published work likes zines are self-empowering, bringing people and their stories from the margins, and centering them. San Antonio-based zine St. Sucia describes it beautifully: “Zines are everyone’s novels and newspaper,” a magazine for the people, by the people. Legalize Sex Work What Sex Trafficking Is/Isn't Why Symbolic Violence Matters Guatemala and the Global Economy Sex, Gender and the Gender Binary The colonial legacy of X Resistance in Iran Anything else you can think of Check with Dr. G if you’re not sure ideaz Zines can include: • Mini-essays • Stats or infographics • Personal thought pieces • Interviews • Images/photos 6 Some Tips on zinemaking Choose your topic carefully. It should be something you feel strongly about. It must be broad enough that you can create several mini-essay pieces about it, but narrow enough to be focused and specific. Make sure you have good academic sources. Usually when we do research papers, I ask you to turn in your sources a month before the paper is due because Gender Studies is a relatively new field and sometimes there is just not much research available on your topic. Academic sources include books, journal articles. , and some internet sites like un.org, or dol.gov. Most .com sites are inappropriate for research. Ask if you’re unsure. Establish your content first. What do you want communicate from your research? Statistics? A story? Quotes from witnesses? The heart of the zine is original writing from your informed perspective. For example, a zine on CEDAW might include short essays on activism since CEDAW, and/or new gender legislation, definitions of feminism, quotes from women politicians, and a list of current UN campaigns. Exploit the format. Straight text is useful but boring, so use graphics, images, photos to break up the text. Try different font sizes and styles - any format is fine. Handwritten is fine and sometimes very stylish, as long as it’s clear. Have fun. Write about something you care about. Use your drawing skills. Play with colors. Add your own poetry. Make it yours. Remember it’s still a final project. Does it reflect your learning? Does it engage your audience?
