Session learning objectives
? Lab report
? Part 1: Clinical Scenario
? Part 2: Reflections
? Activity – Grading
? Electron Microscopy - tour
Clinical Scenario
• Review assessment brief on VLE
• Assessment criteria
• Circa 2000 words
• Context, referencing, drawings
• Review of clinical scenario on handbook
• Answer the questions
Reflection
• All the practical sessions included reflections that you should have completed.

it was completed at the time of the activity and provide the additional information:
1. State which activity you are referring to for the reflection
2. What you learnt and how this relates to what you learnt in the Cellular
Pathology and Imaging module
3. What skills have you gained and how can this be applied as a Biomedical
Scientist in a diagnostic setting
• Circa 500 words
Electron Microscopy
• 2 types – scanning and transmission
• Cellular Pathology – renal and muscle biopsies mainly
• Technique is different than light microscopy: fixation, negative staining,
processing, ultra-microtomy (semi and thins), heavy metal staining
• SEM Pemtron PS-230 with an Oxford x-act detector used for
Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS)
Glomeruli stained with PAS (A),
Jones stain (B), immunocytochemistry
(C) antibody for light microscopy, fluorochrome antibody
(D) for fluorescent microscopy and heavy metals
(E) for electron microscopy.
as a guide, aim for 2500 words. The maximum word limit is 2750 words. Footnotes will not count towards word count totals but must only be used for referencing, not for the provision of additional text. The bibliography will not count towards the word total. If the total word limit is exceeded, a 5% penalty for every 50 words over will be applied to the overall mark. Presentation: ? Work must be referenced, and a bibliography provided ? Work must be submitted as a Word document (.doc/docx) ? Course work must be submitted using Arial font size 11 (or larger if you need to), with a minimum of 1.5 line spacing ? Your student number must appear at the front of the coursework. Your name must not be on your coursework.
