You will choose a topic within your major (or field of interest if you have not yet declared a major). You will identify a specific problem or hot topic within your subject area. You should pick a topic that is your own idea and that is genuinely interesting or meaningful to you. (See below for tips on choosing a topic.) This paper will be argumentative and not just informative. LENGTH AND SOURCES: You will compose a paper that is 5 pages in length (not including cover and Works Cited pages) and will use 3 or more outside sources. Sources might include professional journal articles and professional publications, Internet sources such as Google Scholar and ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) (eric.ed.gov), other educational or government sources, and associations or organizations within your area of study. When using Internet sources, .gov, org and .edu sources are best, as .com web sites are not as reliable for research purposes. Text books and encyclopedias are not good resources for this type of research paper as they are often out of date and not specific or timely enough to discuss a current issue in your major field. There are exceptions to these guidelines, so if you have a source you would like to use that is not listed here, talk to me about it and I will let you know if it is okay. FORMAT: The paper should be written in 12-point font and have 1-inch margins on all sides. The paper MUST be handed in as a Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx). It cannot be handed in as a Google Doc link, as text in the body of an e-mail or in any other format. The file must be uploaded to the Canvas assignment. Papers handed in any other way will not be graded. For this paper you will also include a cover page. The cover page will have your paper's title centered on the page. Beneath your title will be: your name, course and section, date, and my name. Your title should give your audience a good idea what your paper is about. DOCUMENTATION: You will follow the MLA style for citations within your paper as well as for your Works Cited page. There is a reference for this in both your Blair Reader as well as in the Pocket Style Manual. Please refer to that for direction. If you have a question about a particular source you are unsure about, please ask me. PLAGIARISM: Union County College, have a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. The final draft of this paper will be handed in electronically as well as on paper and will be checked by an automatic plagiarism checking program. Please do not consider buying a paper online or plagiarizing any part of your paper in any way. It is not worth the failing grade you will receive for the course if you do this.
