CHLA treats all medical problems for the pediatric population. Their facility oversees care through five departments and is ar stu ed d vi y re aC s o ou urc rs e eH w er as o. co m divisions within each. They are as follows: Anesthesiology & critical care, pathology & laboratory medicine, pediatrics, radiology & imaging, and surgery. CHLA also serves as a pediatric training center for medical student from Keck School of Medicine of USC and is the founding hospital of the Versant Registered Nurse (RN) Residency in Pediatrics. It is also one of West Coast University’s clinical rotation ground for prospective nurses. CHLA focuses on family-centered care being that it is entirely focused on the care and treatment of children of all ages. There many professional services provided at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. To name several are survivorship and supportive care, homeless adolescent and young adults wellness clinic, risk reduction, LIFE Cancer survivorship & transition services, social, and interpretation Th services. CHLA is also a research hospital—affiliated with the Saban research. The institution also helps in the community by providing healthcare services to the homeless pediatric sh population in Los Angeles. In addition, they provide expertise in the care of children who have been diagnosed with cancer at a young age. Lastly, they also provide in-house child care such as infant care, pre-school, kindergarten and a “Get-well room” for mildly sick children of staff nurses as a part of their benefits. These opportunities include escorting patients to hospital appointments, playing with patients in waiting rooms, assisting in hospital playrooms and bedside and reading to children. Geographically, CHLA has some issues due to their location as they are located on Sunset blvd, where traffic proves to be unsettling to some of its patrons. The institution is quite large and one can easily get lost from the enormous physical layout. Accessibility to the institution maybe quite difficult as the entrance is located at the corner of Rodney St and Sunset is ar stu ed d vi y re aC s o ou urc rs e eH w er as o. co m adjacent to the iconic CHLA children playblocks landmark. Finding and parking your vehicle is the most troublesome issue for CHLA. Transportation may or may not be issue for some as there are shuttles provided from the hospital. From my observations, many individuals would take a Lyft or an Uber that bring them to the drop off point with a convenient driveway at the main entrance. Aside from being located in Hollywood, they also have additional outpatient centers located in Arcadia, Encino, Santa Monica, South Bay, and Valencia. The social issues of the pediatric population vary from being homeless to not able to acquire adequate healthcare. Some common issues faced by the pediatric population in general are neglect, abuse such as physical or sexual, homelessness, and drug use in young adolescents. CHLA provides assistance and care for this population through their professional services and programs aforementioned. Parents of children are more than encouraged to be involved in the Th care for their children. The demographic of the clients served come from a diverse background of sh different cultures and ethnicities. Due to the diversity of clients, CHLA also has a diverse staff that speak 2 or more languages. Most often, one can know about the institution by watching their commercial on regular broadcast. Since CHLA is a research and teaching hospital, it invites nursing and medical students to have clinical rotations and residency programs at their institution. When an issue arises during the care of a client, the client’s family and communicate with the institution through the patient relations and service called ICARE, which stands for Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Enthusiasm. CHLA strives to prove the utmost of care, so when a is ar stu ed d vi y re aC s o ou urc rs e eH w er as o. co m problem arises, they want to fix the problem as soon as possible to maintain client satisfaction and reputation of the hospital. Activities completed during the community experience of the flu vaccine clinic were administering flu vaccines to CHLA staff and volunteers, educating staff and volunteers about the risks and benefits of getting the flu shot, explaining the different doses needed per age group, and the side effects of receiving the flu shot. Aside from being a volunteer for the flu vaccine clinic, the staff and volunteers were diverse and came from multiple cultural backgrounds. Some of the individuals, within a short period of time, would tell me what position they worked at in the institution and how much they loved their jobs. Others would be anxious about having the flu vaccine for concerns of allergies and adverse side effects that may be experienced despite having the vaccine before. Those that were afraid or anxious were given more time to relax and have a Th small conversation before being injected. Overall, it was a fun experience learning about CHLA sh from its employees. In addition to being a non-profit organization, CHLA also has programs to better serve the community around them. Their mission statement states that “We create hope and build healthier futures” (CHLA, 2019). CHLA gives back to the community by increasing access to health care resources and information for young children, conduct community education and outreach regarding federal, state, and local access programs, raise awareness of pediatric health and related safety and social issues, and collaborate with local community clinics to promote pediatric health and wellness to make available information and resources to providers who care for families in underserved areas. In 2016, the CHLA Division of Cardiology provided free cardiac screenings to Bakersfield youth. CHLA also helps adolescents and young adults with is ar stu ed d vi y re aC s o ou urc rs e eH w er as o. co m cancer and blood disease connect and integrate in the community as a part of their Teen Impact program that was launched in 1988. The Saban Research Institute’s interdisciplinary research is combined with clinical care devote exclusively to children. Their research strives to explore the origins of health and disease and the “most pressing national child-health issues” (CHLA, 2019). Lastly, CHLA invited schools, such as St. Mary’s Academy in Inglewood, to participate in the Community Health Needs Assessment project. Through this project, they “were able to identify health resources, opportunities to exercise and assets that improve the quality of life”. The project inspired its participants to do better to improve their community. Overall, CHLA carries out their mission and values to everyone they collaborate with. In conclusion, I learned much about what CHLA does to help the community around them through health education and promotion. CHLA employees have been imbued with the Th institution’s mission statement and values to provide the utmost excellence in care for its clients sh and client’s families. Although I only volunteered twice for the flu vaccine clinic, I am grateful for having this experience.
