Students are encouraged to discuss online the assignment tasks with the teaching staff and other students. However, the final submitted assignment must be the work of the submitting student. Due Dates: The assignment is due by Friday 14/05/2021 at 3PM (Brisbane time) via Blackboard submission (no hardcopy submission is required or accepted). Submission: The submission of Part A (comprising A.1 and A.2) BPMN and Part B ISD will be via one PDF file (i.e., one PDF file containing the completed Part A and Part B). The submission of Part C (Excel) will be via the assignment Excel workbook file “BISM1201 Assignment Part C Excel S1 2021.xlsx” available on the course Blackboard site. That is, each student will enter the required Excel formulas into that file and submit that file. Assignment files naming convention: Your two submission files should be named (ALL CHARACTERS IN UPPERCASE) in the following format: Tutorial number (comprising T followed by the full digit tutorial number i.e., T10, T02). This tutorial number must then be followed by an underscore character and your name e.g., "T10_TIMSMITH”. Part A: Business Process Model and Notation A.1: BISMoB Bank Recruitment Process (10 marks) A business process model was created by a staff member at BISMoB bank and it is believed to have BPMN syntax errors (BPMN modelling errors). As an experienced business analyst, you are asked to read the process model carefully and find the BPMN syntax errors. What you need to do • • • • • In the process model below, the BPMN constructs are marked alphabetically from A-Z. Only -5 4 of these constructs are incorrectly used in modelling the process. You need to find these -5- 4 errors. You must write your results in a brief report, consisting of ---five four short paragraphs (maximum 100 words per error). Each paragraph should cross-reference the BPMN constructs on the process model which are marked with a letter (A, B, C, …). Each paragraph should correctly name the construct that you have identified as an error and describe why your identified error is an incorrect practice of BPMN modelling guidelines. Ensure that each paragraph cross-references the letter that you have found on the BPMN model. You can number your paragraphs as Error 1, Error 2, …, Error 4. See below for an example answer. Example answer: Error 1: “F is incorrect because [……..]. It should be modelled using [……..]” Page 1 of 10 Each correctly identified and correctly explained error in your analysis is worth 2.5 marks. You must only identify -5 4 errors. We will not mark more than-5 4 errors. Scenario: Recruitment process at BISMoB Bank BISMoB Talent Acquisition Department in BISMoB Bank is made up of five talent specialists and a talent manager. Here is how the recruitment process works in BISMoB: The process starts when an applicant submits their expression of interest (EOI) letter to the bank’s Talent Acquisition Department, which is received by the talent specialist. Once an EOI is received, a talent specialist reviews the EOI and then invites the applicant to an initial interview. Then the talent specialists conduct an initial interview with the applicant. If, based on the initial interview, the talent specialist decides that an applicant matches the employment criteria, the talent specialist will ask the applicant to complete an application documentation package. The application documentation package includes full details of the applicant’s skills relevant to the job, and the applicant’s CV and recommendation letters as part of the documentation package. However, if the talent specialist decides, based on the initial interview, that the applicant does not match the job requirements, then they will store the information in talent database (for future reference), and then will conclude the process by sending a rejection notification to applicant. As a next step, the talent specialist receives the completed application form and documentation package from the applicant. The talent specialist then checks the application form and documentation package for completeness. If the documentation is complete, then the talent specialists will start a certification assessment process which is a whole process by itself. If the application is not complete, then the process is terminated since the bank is looking for people with attention to details. Once the certification assessment is complete, then the application will be reviewed by the talent manager. While the talent manager is reviewing the application, the talent specialist communicates with the applicant’s referees. The process continues only after communication with referees is completed and the talent manager has reviewed the application. The next step is a whole process by itself and it is called the recruitment interview. Finally, after the recruitment interview sub-process is completed, the process is concluded by sending a final decision notification to applicant. Page 2 of 10 Applicant BISM1201 – 2021? Semester 1? Recruitment Process (5 marks) The BISMoIN Insurance (Ltd.) recruitment department is recruiting. To document the recruitment process, the business process is modelled by one of insurance company’s staff members. However, the process model does not correctly reflect the recruitment process scenario and is believed to have two errors. These two errors are related to compliance of the process model with its scenario. Note: they are not syntax errors, rather they are processes modelled incorrectly and not according to the scenario. As an experienced business analyst, you are asked to read the process model carefully and find two parts of the process that are not correctly modelled according to the scenario. What you need to do • • There are two errors related to how the process is modelled according to the scenario below. Find the two incorrectly modelled parts of the process. Write a brief report, consisting of maximum 200 words, cross referencing to the scenario steps, describing why each of your identified error is not correctly modelled. Also, describe how it should be modelled. Each correctly identified and correctly explained error in your analysis is worth 2.5 marks. Example answer: Number 1 is incorrect because [……..]. The correct way to model this step is [……..] Recruitment interview scenario The BISMoIN recruitment process starts when a recruitment interview is initiated. The following steps take place: 1. The recruitment specialist will conduct a video interview with applicant. 2. The video interview is then reviewed by the recruitment specialists and then assessed by the recruitment manager. 3. If the recruitment manager approves the applicant, then the recruitment specialist will conduct an online assessment. 4. If the recruitment manager does not approve the applicant’s video interview, then the application is concluded with rejection notification sent to the applicant. 5. After conducting the online assessment by recruitment specialist, a face-to-face interview is conducted by the recruitment manager. 6. After the face-to-face interview, the senior recruitment consultant conducts a final decision meeting. 7. If the final decision is to hire the applicant, then the recruitment specialists create a job offer package. The job offer package will then be reviewed by the senior recruitment consultant. The process is completed by a job offer package being sent to applicant. 8. If decision is to reject the applicant based on the final decision meeting, then the recruitment manager updates the talent database and then a notification is sent to the applicant to conclude the process. They have been producing and selling bikes for over 50 years. With the increase in interest in fitness and health tracking applications (e.g., like Strava, Map My Run, Nike training etc.) BB Cycles have decided to develop their own fitness tracking app (called “FitBikePro”) as a complementary product and income stream. The idea is that BB Cycles could use the app to learn about their customer cycling habits and use this to inform the development of their bicycles and their marketing strategy. It could also allow BB Cycles to track customers and know how many kilometres a bike has done and suggest a service or even a new bike. Whilst BB Cycles have developed their own internal information systems like inventory, ecommerce and sales, and human resources systems, the development of a customer use application is new for the firm. The firm has a small team of developers and system analysts. The firm has used a Waterfall approach to systems development when developing previous information systems. This has resulted in good outcomes and fit with the predictive, well defined, and rather straight forward nature of past information systems that the firm developed. To put it differently, in the past the development of information systems in BB Cycles involved low technical risk, and the requirements were well understood thus they could be planned stepby-step from the beginning. You have recently joined the firm as a business analyst after graduating. You have suggested to your manager that a more agile approach, such as Scrum, would suit the development of FitBikePro. The manager of the firm has little knowledge about of Scrum and agile methods to information systems development. A challenge facing BB Cycles is that fitness and health apps are still relatively new and changing rapidly. Developing a fully operational app using the Waterfall approach will take time. It might also be complicated due to multiple rounds of adaptation and refinement. The firm wants the mobile application to be ready to be deployed in some capacity as soon as possible so that they do not fall further behind the existing competition. Updates, new features, and upgrades can be made later. In other words, the firm would like a minimal viable product available as soon as possible. For instance, as a starting point the FitBikePro app could only track activity (e.g., a ride). Later, other functionalities could be added such as ‘adding friends’ and ‘sharing activities’. Not having any experience with Scrum your manager is concerned that it may confuse the development of the FitBikePro and could lead to wastage and a poor end quality product. The manager is concerned with the high failure rate of information systems development projects. Your manager has asked you to explain why Scrum would be better than Waterfall for developing FitNBikePro. Page 6 of 10 Please answer the following questions (questions 1a, 1b, 1c). The questions require you to use basic analysis of the case outlined above. You must base your answers on the material covered in our weeks of information systems development coverage. Consequently, there is no need to reference your answers. You should use the terminology from the seminars/materials covered on information systems development. Your total answer should be concise and not exceed 700 words in total (see the word limit guide per question). There is absolutely no need for verbose responses. This is the communication style of a good business analyst – concise, relevant, and accurate. • Question 1a: Explain why the Scrum approach is better suited than the Waterfall approach for the development of FitBikePro. Give three reasons. (6 marks) (300 words) • Question 1b: How could Scrum ceremonies support the development of FitBikePro? (3 marks) (200 words) • Question 1c: List and describe two possible limitations of using Scrum (instead of Waterfall) for the development of FitBikePro. (3 marks) (200 words) Question 2 (3 marks) Approaches to information systems development such as Waterfall, Scrum, End-User Development, and Joint Application Development all involve users in the user requirements phase to some extent. Explain why it is necessary to include users in understanding information system requirements. Why shouldn’t information systems be designed based on the requirements of project managers and designers only? (300 words) Page 7 of 10 Part C: Excel (10 marks) The Excel workbook file for the tasks described below (BISM1201 Assignment Part C Excel S1 2021.xlsx) is available on the assessment tab on the course Blackboard site. There are four worksheets in the workbook, labelled Task 1, Task 2, Task 3, Task 4. Only edit the indicated cells (the empty blue shaded cells). Do not manipulate any of the other cells. Ensure you use the recommended functions in a formula (see column 5). Please add your (i) name, (ii) student ID, (iii) tutorial number, and (iv) tutor name on the first worksheet (in the blue box in the upper left corner). Please complete the questions as outlined below. Worksheet 1, Task 1: 2 questions (2 marks per question) Question Cells Task/problem Example 1 I8:I13 Calculate consultant bonus: Bob Inaros generates sales in Queensland for $5,000, Victoria for $100,000 and NSW for $60,000. Therefore, he receives no bonus. If a consultant generates sales greater than or equal to: $10,000 for Queensland, and $20,000 for Victoria, and $50,000 for NSW then the bonus for the total amount should be calculated based on the total amount (e.g., Queensland + NSW + Victoria) and the rate from the “Bonus_rates table”. 2 J8:J13 Create email address: Write a formula to create an email address in J8:J13 using the first name and last name of the consultant. Add a "." between the first and last name. Add the "@" symbol after the last name. Finally use the “Consultant_details table” to obtain the email domain name by using the first letter of the first name and the last three letters of the last name to match the consultant ID. Frank Chan generates sales of $25,000 in Queensland, $75,000 in Victoria, and $65,000 NSW. His total therefore is $165,000 and he is entitled to 20% commission which equals $33,000 i.e. the number $33,000 should be displayed in cell I9. Bob Inaros’ email address in cell J8 should display as: “Bob.Inaros@bbgroup.com” (his Consultant ID is BROS). Jon Lannister’s email address in cell J13 should display: “Jon.Lannister@tychos.com” (his Consultant ID is JTER). Excel Functions/features to you should use IF, SUM, VLOOKUP, AND Define the named range E19:F23 as “Bonus_rates” and use this in your VLOOKUP VLOOKUP, LEFT, RIGHT, CONCAT (or CONCATENATE) Define the name range H19:I24 as “Consultant_details” and use this in your VLOOKUP Page 8 of 10 Worksheet 2, Task 2: 1 question (2 marks) Question Cells Task/problem Example 1 H4:H9 Create a new Staff ID: Jose’s “Staff ID” is “129300” and so the “New Staff ID” must become N129300X”. This table includes staff members with two different formats of Staff ID (column A). A new format for Staff ID has been set by management. All Staff IDs must start with “N” and be eight characters long. Using the initial Staff ID (column A) add “N” to the beginning of the ID, then add “X” or “XX” to the end to ensure the new ID in column H is eight characters long. Excel Functions/features to you should use IF, LEN, CONCAT (or CONCATENATE) Jason’s “Staff ID” is “17263” and so the “New Staff ID” must become “N17263XX”. Worksheet 3, Task 3: 1 question (2 marks) Question Cells Task/problem Example 1 G4:G9 Calculate the living allowance for staff: David Silver joined the firm before 2016 and is “Senior” so he is permitted a city living allowance. He is located in Melbourne (i.e., cell E4), so he receives a 10% bonus of $18,500. Cell D4 should display $18,500. Staff are allocated a city living allowance if they joined the firm before 2016 (column C) OR if they hold a “Senior” position (column D). Calculate the city allowances using the rates specified in the “City_ allowance table”. Where staff do not receive an allowance the text "No living allowance" should be displayed. Excel Functions/features to you should use IF, OR, YEAR, VLOOKUP Define the name range C15:D20 as “City_allowance” and use this in your VLOOKUP Hugo Chevi joined the firm in 2019 and is “Junior” and thus is not permitted a living allowance and the text "No living allowance" should be displayed. Page 9 of 10 Worksheet 4, Task 4: 1 question (2 marks) Ques tion Cells Task/problem Example 1 L4:L11 Calculate gross weekly pay: Employee 1908 worked 12 hours Monday to Friday, and 1 hour on a Sunday. Therefore, employee 1908 should paid a for 12 hours at the standard hourly rate and 1 hour at the rate of 100% extra. Calculate the staff's Gross Pay (i.e., the hourly rate appropriate to their job, multiplied by the hours worked). For hours worked on Saturday, pay is increased by 50%, and there is a 100% increase for Sunday hours. Note that JobCodes in B4:B11 refer to the type of position. In the “Pay_rates table”, the Job Code has a number, 1-4 after it (e.g., AC1), signifying the pay bracket (hourly rate). The bracket is simply the number of years since the employee was hired. For example, BB1 means that an employee works in the Job Code BB, and has been working for one year. Next year, he/she will become BB2 and earn more money. Therefore, you need to include in your formula a way to determine the Pay Code based on the Job Code and the year the employee was hired (until the current year). Excel Functions/features to you should use SUM, VLOOKUP, the operator (&), YEAR, TODAY, IFERROR Define the named range A17:B32 as “Pay_rates” and use this in your VLOOKUP Since employee 1908 has a job code of PT and started working in 2017, their Pay Code from the Pay Rates table is PT4. Therefore, their standard hourly rate is $152.00. Thus, their Gross Pay is $2,127.94 If a JobCode does not appear in the pay rates table, the cell should show "Manual review". Note: that no staff member has been hired less than a year ago, or more than four years ago (i.e., pay bracket will only be from 1-4, e.g., BB1 to BB4).
