Automated pathology systems are emerging as one of the hottest new technologies in clinical laboratory.  A link to the brochure of one system can be found below.

 Please read the brochure and locate a web resource that describes either another automated microscopy system or a research study involving an automated microscopy system.  Since this is an emerging technology, please try to find current literature (within the last few years).  Review of analyzers and systems that automated other processes are not acceptable. You should be focusing your search on microscopy, identification of cells/tissues, and associated analysis only.

Original Post: Provide a citation and brief description of the source you found.  Include an overview of how the technology system works or the main hypothesis and results of the study.  If you have experienced working with instruments in hematology or urinalysis that perform some automated cell recognition (automated diffs, for example), does the experience make you feel more, or less, confident about the ability of instrumentation to safely and effectively screen Histology slides?  What procedure or approach to this technology would you propose, if it is introduced at your place of employment?  Develop ideas about the change in work flow. 

 Responses: Reply to at least two other original posts.  Take the stance of a pathologist working in a community hospital or a member of the pathology team in a large reference lab.  Take the perspective of this healthcare professional and provide additional insight related to the platform or research described by the post.  How will they perceive this technology or information?  How will it affect their ability to do their job each day?   Provide their critique including benefits and drawbacks.  Additional responses may include conversation with other “pathologists” at your facility.  How can you work together to address this technology?  What can you do to help others in your role adapt to change or justify the traditional approach?
