C. Responding to Literature – 3 Personal Essays (27 marks)

1.            For each of the three essays, write one sentence that gives the title of the essay, the name of the author, and the genre of the piece in a single well-constructed sentence. In a second sentence, give the thesis, beginning your sentence with “The thesis is that”.  (2 marks each for 6 marks)

Example:

“The World As I See It” is a personal essay written by Albert Einstein and originally published in 1932. The thesis is that living fully requires recognizing that one’s life is meaningful, and that “from the point of view of daily life… we exist for our fellow men” (Einstein 1).

2.            None of the three essays uses a formal level of language. However, they do not all use the same level of language. Rank the three essays from most formal to least formal language level. For full marks, explain your thinking clearly and provide evidence from the essays to support your rankings.

Use MLA Works Cited and in-text citation as modeled in the prereading for each essay and for the previous question to properly credit the evidence you take from the essays. You may not have precise pages to offer, so use the page range given for the essay in the reading.

(6 marks: 2 marks each for sensible ranking, clear explanations, and solid evidence properly cited)

3.            Reread the notes on idioms from the Brightspace materials (1.2.4 Semi-formal Language) and find your three favourite idioms from any of the three essays. For each, give the idiom in the context of its sentence and then provide a formal English translation. If you use a third-party source such as Urban Dictionary, include a link to the definition. You do not need to use MLA citations for this question. (1 mark each for 3 marks)

4.            Select the essay that made the biggest impression on you and answer the following questions about it. Each time you make an assertion, provide evidence from the essay to support your point.

Use MLA Works Cited and in-text citation as modeled in the prereading for each essay and for the previous question to properly credit the evidence you take from the essays. You may not have precise pages to offer, so use the page range given for the essay in the reading.

a.            Describe the tone of the essay you have selected. (2 marks)

b.            Identify what you think is the purpose and the audience of the essay. Then describe the style. (2 marks)

c.             Write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences) describing your reaction to this essay. Did you have any personal connection to it? If so, how would you describe that connection? (8 marks: 2 for topic sentence, 2 for clarity, 2 for thoroughness, and 2 for evidence)
