In young adulthood two important things take place

Writing

In young adulthood two important things take place. We define who we are and we enter into adult relationships. And it's important to understand ourselves before we can truly enter into meaningful relationships with others.

From adolescence through early adulthood there is a lot of experimentation as we attempt to clearly define ourselves. Gender identity, personality, likes and dislikes, values and beliefs, friends and family all contribute to our sense of who we are. Family, friends and social media often try to influence and shape our perceptions of who we are. And as adolescents we often allow them to do so.

But as young adults we start to realize that we shouldn't let others define who we can be, who we are, or who we should be. That really has to come from within. This is tied to the idea of having an internal locus of control. These videos relate to defining one's concept of self and how we see ourselves.

How do you define yourself? (Links to an external site.)

For this assessment I'd like you to compare how you felt about yourself as a teen, and who or what influenced those perceptions, with how you would define yourself today. Do you see yourself differently? Is your view of yourself based on outside influences? Or have you come to define yourself based more on your own internal assessments?

Use examples and references from previous modules, as well as personal experiences to connect to the material presented in class.
