NAPA RIVER’S LOCATION The Napa River is a river approximately 55 miles (89 km) long in the U.S. state of California. THE COURSE OF THE NAPA RIVER The source begins as seasonal Kimball Canyon Creek in Robert Louis Stevenson State Park at an elevation of 3,745 feet (1,141 m) which descends the southern slope of Mt. St. Helena to Kimball Canyon Dam. It flows south for 4 miles (6 km), entering the head of the slender Napa Valley north of Calistoga. In the valley, it flows southeast past Calistoga, St Helena, Rutherford, Oakville and through Napa, its head of navigation. Downstream from Napa, it forms a tidal estuary, entering Mare Island Strait, a narrow channel on the north end of San Pablo Bay. It discharges into San Pablo Bay through the Napa Sonoma Marsh. THE SOURCE OF WATER OF THE NAPA RIVER The Napa River rises in northwestern Napa County just south of the summit of Mt. St. Helena in the Mayacamas Mountains of the California Coast Ranges. THE NAPA VALLEY AND IT’S WATERSHEDS Napa county has 3 distinct watersheds, each named after the main body of water flowing through them: Putah Creek Watershed, Suisun Creek Watershed, and Napa River Watershed. The Napa River Watershed is home to 95% of the county's population and has its headwaters (beginning point) in the southern slopes of Mount Saint Helena. The headwaters at Pioneer Park in Calistoga, are where water from Kimball Reservoir flows into town and begins its journey to the bay. DOES NAPA RIVER WATERSHEDS PROVIDE AS MUCH WATER AS THEY ARE USED TO ? In the Napa Valley, most streams have been altered since 1800, either directly, indirectly, or both. Development of the Napa Valley has been markedly accelerated in the last 40 years, compared to the previous 100 years. Which means that not only it provides just as much water as it used to but even more. Napa river watershed profile THE RESTAURATION PROCESS ? Vineyard owners with property that borders the Rutherford Reach, a 4.5-mile (7.2 km) stretch of the Napa River between St. Helena and Oakville, are allowing prime land to return to a natural state in order to help preserve the ecology of the river. The project known as Rutherford Restoration Project involves 23 property owners have combined forces to provide 18 acres (73,000 m2) of land to this cause. ? After the restoration, native North American beaver returned to the area, establishing 3-4 beaver dams.These keystone species have been shown to increase fish, bird and mammal abundance and diversity in California rivers and streams. They also benefit trout and salmon by reducing sediment loads and improve water quality. ? The southern part of the river has also been undergoing restoration as former salt ponds along the river are being restored to their natural state. WHAT ARE THE ISSUES THAT NAPA RIVER FACES? ? Pollution is caused by the run-off of fertilizers. During summer, algae bloom decreases the oxygen available to aquatic life. ? Water diversion from the streams that feed the river decreases the fresh water flow, affecting fish habitat. ? Stream bank erosion and removal of plant life due to development causes sedimentation. ? 70 to 200 thousand tons of sediments enter the Napa Valley watershed every year due to roads, development and hillside vineyards. ? Sediment deposits in the stream and river channels are harmful to anadromous fish, (salmon, trout and lamprey) by reducing habitat diversity, filling in gravel used as spawning beds, and decreasing the food supply for fish THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE STAKEHOLDERS & POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS PROVIDED In Napa, government and community united to develop and implement a unique, innovative, scientifically based approach based on “Living River” objectives to alleviate flooding and simultaneously improve the health of the river, build a river community and revitalize the waterfront.
