Briefing Note 1

As a doctoral-level student, you are expected to identify and locate appropriate information for summarizing in this assignment. You will need to conduct independent student research and identify at least three to five articles (written within the last five years) relating to core marketing theories. These articles need to be peer reviewed (i.e., academic journals) and represent advanced thought on separate marketing theories. These articles can be from any discipline or area of business, but they must directly discuss marketing theories and how these theories have changed over the years to reflect the most current thinking in the field.

 

Summarizing complex issues or large amounts of information into key points is an essential skill for managers and academics alike. One form of summarization information is a briefing note, which is a short, well-structured paper that quickly and effectively informs individuals about broad or complex issues. The focus of this assignment is summarizing and evaluating course content, relating a deeper understanding of that content, and applying the findings through business-intelligent recommendations.

 

To successfully meet the requirements for this assignment, you are required to develop a 10-page summary (about 2500 words, double-spaced) following the content outline below. Your summary should be written to inform an industry professional who may not have any background concerning this content. A well-prepared briefing note quickly informs a person and should be:

 

  • Concise: A short document isn’t necessarily concise. When something is concise, every word has been used as efficiently as possible.

 

  • Clear: Keep things simple and to the point. Always have your reader firmly in mind and include only what matters. (Remember, this is an industry professional who hasn’t had an opportunity to learn these concepts but needs this information to improve the organization.)

 

  • Applicable: The note should be written for a decision maker to help them make an organization better. Your recommendations should focus on increasing the effectiveness of the industry.

 

To ensure that your briefing note includes all required information, follow the content outline below while providing clearly identified headings.

 

  1. Issue/Topic/Purpose: A concise statement of the core issues, topics, and areas of importance presented in the article/videos. (Think about overall themes.) This section should, in four to five sentences, outline why the briefing note matters and create an expectation for included content. It is important to identify how these issues relate to business and organizational outcomes.

 

  1. Analysis: A synthesized summary of concepts, ideas, theories, and topics from the presented information. In this section, you should provide a backdrop for future sections. Relay insights about significant aspects of the content. Explanations should focus more on core concepts, ideas, potential organizational implications and less on a structural outline or verbatim discussion of content.

 

  1. Application: Your assessment on how content from the readings/videos impacts business or industry, along with a comparison/contrast between “what the content says” and the “realities of business” (i.e., would there be any difficulties associated with the use of this information within industry). Your personal opinions should be limited, but you are required to draw upon your experiences and external readings/references/illustrative examples to demonstrate how content can be applied and significantly impact industry.

 

  1. Recommendations: Provide three recommendations for how an organization can use this information to increase business success. This section should not introduce new content, but rather provide detailed recommendations, along with appropriate support/reasoning for each recommendation, and explain why and how they should be implemented. Each recommendation should also be supported by an illustrative example of how it would work in industry.

 

When preparing this assignment, ensure that your content is double-spaced with 1-inch margins. Your paper should include a cover page, page numbers, and for each section of required content, an appropriate heading. (If there are six components, include six section headings.) A separate reference page should be included with all references formatted following APA style. The cover page, appendices, and references do not count toward the final paper length.
