Exam 1

1. (10 points total, 70% content, 30% communication quality). Discuss positive and negative examples of the application of each of the habits of highly effective people proposed by Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People within the Bearington plant case described in the The Goal. Overall, how well do you believe the Bearington plant case and Theory of Constraints (TOC) in general align with the habits of highly effective people? (Describe and support your conclusion).

2. (10 points total, 70% content, 30% communication quality). Compare and contrast the 14

Principles of the Toyota Production System (TPS) as described by Liker in The Toyota Way. with the habits of visionary companies identified by Collins & Porras in Built to Last. Hint:

Make sure to discuss each principle and habit. Overall, how well do you believe these two systems are aligned? (Describe and support your conclusion).

3. (10 points total, 70% content, 30% communication quality). Develop a systems diagram (whatever that looks like to you) documenting the most important interrelationships between the 14 Principles of the Toyota Production System (TPS). Explain and justify the relationships included in your diagram (i.e., why you believe they are most important). Discuss how an organization might use your diagram to better manage the implementation of lean in their organization.

Note: you are not required to submit 15 pages of work, and, indeed, it is quite likely that you may be able to adequately address the questions in fewer than 15 pages. However, 15 pages is the maximum length allowed. Although there is not a lower limit, if your exam is fewer than 5 pages in total, I recommend that you carefully consider whether you have fully addressed each question in sufficient detail and with sufficient evidence/justification to support your points.
