The purpose of this assignment is for students to become aware of their own habits of presence in
their everyday lives. One of the most important aspects of mastering one’s own physical language is
to learn how to be present and to project presence. This assignment is often eye-opening for students
as it shows them how often they are not fully present and how difficult it is to be present. This activity
is the first step for students toward gaining control over their own presence.

Choose a 24-hour period this week in which you will attempt to be present at all times. Being present
means that you are 100% in the moment at all times in mind and body. This means that you will
remain focused on the task at hand at all times in the 24-hour period and not let your mind wander to
other things. You will also stay focused and present at all times, putting your full attention on whatever
you are doing in each moment, whether that is a conversation, a class, a project at work, spending
time with your spouse or child, etc. This means no smartphones or social media, no intermittent
checking of email (only check it when you intend to check it as your only task). This sounds simple,
but it can be very difficult to do it, that is why there is a 24-hour time limit. Once you’ve spent your 24
hours being present, write a responsé¥approximately two pages) that reflects on the experience. You
may use the following questions as a guide, but you are not required to answer them all:
4. What did you notice about being present? Was this an easy task for you or was it difficult, why?
2. What did you learn about yourself and your own communication habits from this activity?
3. How did being present at all times change your daily routine/activities?
4. How did being present change your physical language?
5. Moving forward, what can you take away from this experience that you think will be beneficial to
you personally or professionally?

NOTE: Your two peer critiques are due by FRIDAY this week (at 11:59 pm MT.). This will
enable your peers to incorporate your feedback before they submit their assignments on

e To provide your feedback to your assigned peers, reply to their initial post and paste the
completed rubric for each peer into the discussion text pane OR attach the completed
rubric as a doc or docx file.

e To receive full credit you must use the Peer Critique Rubric J
( to assess the
posts of two of your peers. To do this well, pretend you are the instructor grading the
student's paper.

e Following the point-based items in the rubric, your written feedback (at least 150 words) to
your peer must be constructively worded and offer content-based suggestions (not merely
experiences and/or opinions) which compel the author to think more deeply about specific
elements of their draft. Here is a short list of tactics you might wish to employ in your peer

e Supply additional evidence in support of your peer's idea(s).

¢ Challenge your peer to consider other perspectives by sharing additional evidence, asking
specific follow-up questions, or identifying potential oversight and opportunities to improve
their position.

e Provide constructive feedback, including providing specific examples of what they did well
and why it was effective or providing respectful, specific examples of what needs
improvement and why.

In class discussions, please be mindful of the following:

e Quality posts and responses contribute to a rich learning community by citing readings,
sharing examples, and building on the ideas of others in a collegial manner.

e Everyone has the right to be heard.

e Be respectful while still being critical.

e Hold yourself and each other to high standards of excellence at all times.

e Practice humility and recognize that you do not know everything; everyone has the
opportunity to learn.

e Recognize that everyone will start from different bases of knowledge and experience.
