Prion disease is a considerable risk, particularly in the histology laboratory.  The are somewhat unusual and have different characteristics than the typical infectious agent.  We often read and watch news stories about "mad cow disease" and other similar diseases.  New research is indicating that neurological disorders such as Alzeheimer's and Parkinson's may share the same underlying cause of misfolded proteins.

Read the following articles regarding prion disease.  Consider the risks in the histology laboratory and what can be done to prevent transmission of illness.
