Assignment (Due: May 10th) Before you begin the e-portfolio process it is important to first define your purpose and goals for the e-portfolio: ? ? ? ? Why are you creating an e-portfolio? Who is the intended (target) audience? What do you hope to accomplish by having an e-portfolio? What are your e-portfolio goals and expectations? Understand the purpose of your e-Portfolio. The e-Portfolio will be used to demonstrate your achievement and mastery of particular core competencies, so all the materials you select or develop, and all your discussion and reflections should be relevant to demonstrating your skills and expertise. Collect evidence. Collect as much material which might be relevant as you can. Essays, projects, any of your assignments, special projects completed at your workplace, or evidence (work produced) of knowledge acquired as a result of attending a conference or workshop in your area of study may be appropriate for consideration at this stage. At this stage, collect evidence of your achievements for potential inclusion in your e-Portfolio and add them to your e-Portfolio. Select relevant materials. It is important to have as much evidence as possible before you as you begin the selection process so that you can be certain of choosing the work that best demonstrates your achievements. This is the work you want in your e-Portfolio. The e-Portfolio is not simply an amalgam of everything that you have done but a carefully selected collection or synthesis of your evidence. Please note that the Statements of Competency (where you present your competency, and your selected evidence, and make the case for your mastery of the competency) are the most important parts of the e-Portfolio. What to Include in your Eportfolio There are no set rules on what to include in your eportfolio because it is your creative outlet to showcase your abilities and goals. But to help you get started, consider including the following sections recommended by eFolio PA: Welcome Summarize who you are and a bit about what visitors will find in your eportfolio. Give your audience a flavor for what you’re all about and let them know what you value. Also, add a brief description of personal interests and activities Career objective/profile Write a statement summarizing your objective. To be meaningful, your objective should be specific and clear. Résumé Summarize your education, achievements, and work experience. Include detailed information on your skills. ? Use this section to expand on any educational information mentioned in the bio, with qualifications listed in reverse chronological order (i.e., from most recent to least recent). Each entry should include the name and location of institutions attended, degrees, majors/minors, and the actual or anticipated date of graduation (month and year). This is also the place to list honors/awards, training certificates, publications, professional licenses, conferences/workshops, study abroad programs, internships, and scholarships. And don't forget any relevant projects, coursework, testimonials, transcripts, continuing education, presentations, and professional affiliations/memberships. ? List jobs in reverse chronological order. For each position, include the names and locations of employers, job titles, dates of employment (month/year), and the job's duties and responsibilities. Keep the layout consistent and simple so that everything is easy-to-read. Document certificates pertaining to additional training and workshops, certification of technical skills, awards/honors, transcript, volunteer work, and community services, major projects, publications, internships, communication, public speaking, military service, clubs involvement, leadership positions, and foreign language skills. Work samples This information is as diverse as your background. Upload articles, papers, projects, reports, electronic presentations, audio and video projects, assignments, and publications so your audience can see your work. Consider including graphics, audio, and video for further illustration. Basically any materials that can be added to the ePortfolio to represent knowledge and show proof of proficiency. Study Abroad/ International Experience Explanation of what you learned that will benefit the employer; specifics about projects and photos. Awards and honors Since ePortfolios are mainly used to represent capabilities and competence in a specific field, it's important to show any honors and kudos received, awards and accolades won, certificates and training taken, and promotions or performance appraisals. Memberships in professional or educational organizations should also be highlighted. Scan certificates of awards and honors. Additional education List conferences, seminars, workshops, and any other professional development. Add courses, degrees, certifications, and licenses. Volunteer and extracurricular activities List your activities and sports participation AND illustrate through photos. References List three to five people who have agreed to talk about your strengths, abilities, and experience. Be sure to include full contact information. Letters of recommendation and testimonials Include feedback you’ve received from employers, customers, professors, and colleagues. Choosing a Template Once you have chosen your preferred category, templates that you can change to fit your needs. Once you choose your template, you can easily change the background image and the colors to your liking. You can also easily add and remove any pages. But, remember, you can't switch the template itself midway through, so you should choose your template wisely. www.websiteplanet.com Before selecting a template: Prior to selecting your template, you should know what you want out of the site. Ask yourself a few basic questions so you can proceed without having to backtrack. What is the purpose of your site? You should ask yourself what you want out of the site. Do you want to create a blog, or do you want to sell products or showcase your online portfolio? When you know the purpose of your site, you can choose the right style that fits your business model or idea. What kind of style do you want? Some sites are meant to be professional looking, and others are supposed to be more fun. You should think of what kind of message you want to convey before you proceed. If you find a designer-made template, you are going to save time, but you must remember to think about customizing your site so you can stand out. Do you have a vision for your brand? It helps if you know about your brand and your vision as you can create the ideal Wix site. But if you don't, you can keep it simple and build it up over time. However, it's wise to choose a template that complements your company and its identity as you want your customers to perceive you in a positive manner. How much time do you have? Finally, you will want to think of your schedule when you make a site. If you have a lot of free time and aren't launching your business or product soon, you can dedicate tens of hours to making your Wix site. On the other hand, if you want to make a site overnight or in a couple of days, you should select a template that includes features and a layout that you want to include, saving you time from having to organize these yourself. Once you know what you want out of your website, you should check out the vast template collection that Wix provides. To get started, browse the gallery for inspiration. With the extensive collection at Wix.com, you can essentially get anything you want. On the top left corner of the templates page, you can search and then browse the results to find the perfect solution. You can easily find the latest templates by clicking the new button on the left side. Or, if you prefer, you can check out the Most Popular Templates button, which is just below the New templates. Finally, if you want to create a site from scratch, you can do so by clicking the Blank Templates button. However, if nothing suits you or you want to look more, you can select a category to browse such as Music, Blog, Hotel & Travel and many more. Can you think of a competitor you want to emulate? When you are setting up your Wix site, you should first check out your competition. That way, you can find out what you like and don't like about other sites. Then, once you are ready to start building, you can emulate the good things and make an even better site. www.websiteplanet.com You can also click the Mobile View icon in the top left corner to see how the template looks on a mobile device. To get a better idea and understand the flow of the template, you should go through each page individually as you can get an idea on how the site will look in real-world conditions. If, at any point, you are struggling, you should check out the editor related tutorials. It should be noted, if you have any trouble opening your template to edit, you should check your browser settings as it may be blocked by popup blockers or additional add-ons to your browser such as AdBlock. As soon as you have chosen a template, you will be brought to a full-screen example of what this template looks like. If this looks good as a starting point for you – click Edit this site. Boxes will begin to appear over the template, and you have entered the editor view. From here you are able to begin your customization. Once you select your template, you can then set your page background. Again, think of what message you want to convey to your audience. www.websiteplanet.com Managing Backgrounds To set the page background, you will want to click the Background icon on the left side of the editor, where you can then apply any of the preset styles. To upload an image to use as a background, click on the Image button. Then, you will be prompted to either upload your own, or choose from stock images. This can be done individually to any pages you create for your site, or by clicking Apply to Other Pages you will be able to create a uniform feel to the site by applying the same background to your other pages. The Color option will provide a flat single-color background. And Video will enable you to use an animation or clip for the background. This should be used carefully; however, as this can be very distracting from anything else you have on the page, particularly text imprinted directly over a video. If you do decide to go with an image for your background, you have a few options on how to display your image once it has been uploaded, or chosen. To access these options, you will need to click on the ‘cogwheel’ Settings icon on the Page Background pane. Full-Screen Background: Will resize the background image, so it fits the size of the screen. Fit: This option will allow you to maintain the proportional setting between width and height. Tile Vertically: With this option, the content will be displayed in a tile formation across the vertical axis of the site. Tile Horizontally: Same with tile vertically except the image will be displayed in a tile formation. Original Size: With this option, your background image will retain the original dimensions To enable the scroll background option, check the box next to Scroll Background option. If you choose a display setting option (such as original size) that leaves some of the screen not covered by your image, you have the option to set a color for this void-space. Furthermore, because of this, it doesn’t have a menu. So, if you want your visitors to navigate the rest of your site with ease, you need to link a button to the main page of your site. Luckily, you can link to your homepage from your landing page (if you choose to have them separately, of course). To get started, from the landing page, click your button. Then, once the pop-up window opens, click Link To. Once you open the Link To page, click Page. From the dashboard, you can access your sites, check out your templates and even manage your subscriptions, as well as the ability to check out your site history and even send a newsletter or manage your applications. www.websiteplanet.com Choosing Your Wix Domain If you are setting up your Wix site, you can use a Wix subdomain. Alternatively, you can buy your own domain. This option allows you to personalize your website and name further, and, since domain registration is inexpensive, it’s a wise investment in your brand. If you decide to buy your own domain, just click Setup with registrar and enter the information required. Saving Your Website At any point during the process, you can save your site and continue working on it at a later time. If you want to access your saved sites, go to MySites on Wix.com. If you need to save your site, you must first name it, and the name of the site will be part of the Wix URL. To save, click on Save in the top right of the editor. www.websiteplanet.com Publishing When you are finally ready to publish your site and for it to go live, go to the top right of the Wix Editor, and click Publish.
